Next summer my wife and I plan to rent an RV for a month and tour the
rockies in Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. We are going to rent a 22' RV but I
read that I can not expect to take that size vehicle on the Going to The Sun
Road. I know there are tour buses but we want the flexibility of stopping
when and where we want. Have any of you taken an RV to that area and then
rented a car for a day to do the road? If so, can you share your experiences
with me?
TIA.

The Going To The Sun Road is pretty tight. Even if they allow it I wouldn'
try it with any towable or class c or larger.

I was not planning to try it. That is why I asked my question about renting
a car in my original post................

Hi Dick,
You really can't take that Class C on the Road to The Sun. Not only
is it too long, but it's too wide.
I can't remember many places where you could stop, but you could
Google car rentals at both ends and maybe find one.

Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well-preserved body,
but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "...holy sh.t...what a ride!"

Just returned from Glacier and other places. Took the all day Red Bus
tour from West Glacier. Next day we took a helicopter tour of the park.
Stupendous both days. The helo place also rented cars.

Thanks for the tip on the helo place Mary. I will check it out.
As for the all day red bus tour, is my assumption that renting a car so we
could stop where we wanted, when we wanted, and as long as we wanted a good
assumption or were you happy on the bus tour?

We were happy on the bus tour. The driver's commentary was excellent. We
did stop in many places.

Take the Red Jammer Touring Car (bus) out of West Glacier. You'll see more
than you will driving and have ample stops for the photo shoots. There are
really not all that many places to get off hte road and stop anyway.
Been there and done that both ways & liked the Jammer best.

Thanks. As I said in my original post, I know that I can NOT take my RV on
that road.

There are car available for rent in the west Glacier area, but I don't
think I would bother if you simply want to see the Going to the Sun
Road.
The "tour buses" are actually 1930s vintage sedans ("jammers") with
canvas roofs that they keep rolled back for the ride .Take a look at
http://tinyurl.com/cdrdh
We drove the road in our toad a couple weeks ago, but if we hadn't had
that, I would cheerfully have taken a jammer tour. The tours cost around
$45 a head, and everybody I saw in one of them was grinning his a.s off.

My wife and I rode on a motorcycle. Suggest you go first from east to west,
those going west to east were on the cliff side and took their half out of the
middle! :-) Since we were on two wheels, we always had plenty of room. I do
remember RVs on that road, but they were small and not many. Suggest you go
early in the morning and no earlier than July.
