I am not computer illiterate, but I am not stupid either, although I have
been accused of both.

I currently run Outlook Express 6.  I am sick of blogs, crossposters,
blatherers and common garden variety idiots in newsgroups.  I repeatedly hit
BLOCK SENDER for some of the worst, but my system does not filter them.

What am I doing wrong?

Where can I go, and what do I have to do to download some shareware/freeware
that will allow me to cut all these idiots from my view?

TIA

First, many continue to change the information in their posting name,
thereby bypassing the block sender list. Second, IE does not allow for
blocking of cross posters.

So, here's what you can do:

Go to Tools, Message Rules, and create a rule that covers
things/subjects/senders you want to block.

Example: I have a rule that is;
Apply this rule after the message arrives

Where the Subject line contains 'the greatest news'

Delete it

It will then delete from my view any post that has the words "the greatest
news" in the subject line. You can do similar with some posters using their
name or variations.

When all else fails, highlight the subject line, press the delete key, and
confirm that you want that thread permanently deleted.

Others swear by Agent. I tried it and didn't like it. I did get IE Quote Fix
and that has made bottom posting easier.

I think he meant OE for Outlook Express and not IE for Internet Explorer.

I did. We were getting ready to go to Lunenburg, and I answered in a hurry.

1. Forget Outlook Express: it simply doesn't have the level of filtration
that you want.

2. Go to <http://www.download.com/Xnews/3000-2164_4-10144167.html> and
download XNews - it *does* have what you want.

XNews is *FREE* and, IMNSHO, is as good as they get.

Might try this.  It's no longer in production but will filter cross post.

Using Outlook Express.  Go to www.mozilla.org and download either
Mozilla (browser + mail client and newsreader) *or* Firefox (browser)
and Thunderbird (mail client and newsreader).  They cost nothing, they
work, you'll never go back to untabbed browsing, and if you really don't
like them you'll have wasted a bit of time but no money.  Oh, and they
are less frequently attacked by viruses, too.

Thanks to all.  I am leaving at 0600 for a two week trip.  Will have to
figger out xnews and mozilla along the way, if I can tap into the net via my
laptop.

Just a lot to do, and a lot to learn.  This brain doesn't work as good as it
used to, and never did work as well as I thought it did.

A couple of weeks of trout fishing, photographing hummingbirds, and
traveling ought to help get the edge back.

May or may not see you, depending on if I can get on a wifi.  Been so busy
with this and that, I haven't gotten proficient at it yet.

Any suggestions?

Make sure that you've defined the proper port and userid/password for your
terranews account.

Some servers seem to have a limit on the number of connections that you can
use. Check with terranews' web page to see if this may be the case.
