So the results are in, so to speak.

The reason I posted the question of "How much would you pay" is not
because I wanted to take a piece of expensive real estate and make it
into an RV parking lot. It was because I wanted to know, without
hopefully tipping my hat,  how many people would respond, and how many
free parkers, who constantly complain about paying too much for a
commercial CG, would be willing to pay for a lot that is devoid of
amenities instead of using Walmart.

My second thought was how much could a person expect to get for his
trouble to provide a low cost alternative to freeloading at parking
lots.

Well, I posted this in two email lists and 2 newsgroups and then
filtered out the off topic replies and came up with the following:

73 total replies both public and private.

6 wanted to pay a premium price

12 wanted to pay $10 or so

5 wanted to pay $5

50 wanted to pay nothing as " if WalMart is free, so should I be free,"
or they would pass me by.

That pretty much tells me the reason that 99% of all commercial CGs do
not offer a low cost overnighter type piece of ground devoid of
amenities,  and in speaking with CG owners that I do business with that
is what they tell me.

That also blows the BS outta the water promoted by some, that if there
was a cheap alternative to WalMarting et al, they would use it.

Without going into names, I reviewed the past posts I have seen from
people who wanted low cost off street parking instead of high cost CGs
and many of them responded and most wanted to pay nothing or go to
WalMart...

So my beliefs remain the same as before and is now pretty much, in my
view proven that:

Most RVer's use either commercial CGs or RV parks, or a like substitute
(ie state or Fed parks etc)

There are those RVers who live to RV and live to freeload at Flying Js,
WalMarts, Interstate rest stops etc.

Even if there was a low cost substitute to freeloading, most
WallyWorlders would pass it by to exercise their "right" to park where
ever they damned please.

What one needs to read into this is not to take my results personally.
There is no need to defend one's position after the posts were tendered.
If what I wrote doesn't pertain you what YOU wrote, don't get huffy and
chastise me for what others have written.

While I have never Wallyworlded, (my wife enjoys her AC and TV etc, and
I own a quad slide), if I found myself with NO other alternative and I
was exhausted, I would use a WM for an overnight stay, no slides, no BBQ
etc. But I, like others, have seen too many examples of inconsiderate
RVers that have turned the "right to freeload"  into a huge black eye
that many communities are tired of seeing on a daily basis in their
communities. And those people would likely, based on the 50 repsonses I
got, not seek a low cost alterative  if it were available.

In retrospect, many of those who boycott an area due to "lost rights for
freeloading" should continue to boycott an area as their brand of
tourism is not needed or wanted by those communities anyway.

Also keep in mind that as the average non RVing citizen drives by
Walmart and sees a 60' long RV, or 45' long Prevost sitting in Walmart
getting a freebe, it pisses them off that the haves, are rubbing the
noses of the have nots in it again. Kinda like going to the doctor's
office and after parking your 9 year old Chevy, walking by his new
Mercedes, to pay your bill that you can't afford. Wouldn't the doctor be
better off to park his Mercedes out back hidden from view as opposed to
pissing off his patients with reserved parking right out front for all
to see.

We are only a few days from slowly starting our trek southwest for the
winter. We'll be stopping along the way in many places as RVers do. I'll
continue to avoid RV resorts and participate in the discount programs
offered by many places including Passport America, and avoid
freeloading.

The one single biggest thing that those campground owners could do to
help themselves out is to advertise heavily, "in after 9pm out before
8am=reduced rates".  Then charge a little more if they use
electricity.

Folks stop at Walmart passing through because it's more convenient,
and they know the cost.  I wouldn't stop in a campground for an
overnighter if I had to pay the full premium rate when I don't intend
to avail myself of all the amenities.

70 responses doesn't represent the thousands of Rvers in USA.

While we may joke about it the truth is until it's against the law then
"freeloading" is okay.

I still can't figure out the preoccupation with how others do there thing.
The beauty of living in US is the ability to go in pursuit of happiness. If
for some it's saving money by legally overnighting in Wal-Mart then so be it
and if for some it's staying at posh RV affairs to stroke there egos then so
be it.

It's all good.

It is human nature.  Look at the campaign promises of
politicians, look at the laws they pass or try to pass, look
at people constantly voting to ban what others do and tax
others but not themselves.

It is just another form of freeloading.

I guess you are right. It seems every forum have there own grievances.

On my Mini Cooper forum the war is between classic owners and the new BMW
Mini owners.

Life's too short.

I think a good fight will be to force manufacturers of RV to play by
automobile safety standards, etc
