I recently purchased a used 1985 Terry Taurus trailer 22 feet long. I have
been getting friends to assist me in moving it as I do not have a tow
vehicle. Does anyone know what the trailer weight would be and what the
minimum size of engine would be for towing this trailer.

Any Briggs & Stratton bigger than 2 hp will haul it fine - everything
depends on gearing. What you should be looking for is not engine size
but whether the tow rating adequately exceeds the GVWR of the trailer
- which appears on the ID label. (Gross Vehicle Wt Rating)

I'm new to RVing. This is my first trailer and I'm VERY unfamiliar with most
things about it. I have no idea where to find the vehicle ID label. Any idea
where it might be? My ownership says the trailer is 1200 kg (about 2600 lbs)
but I think it weighs more than that. Would I be able to use a 3.9l (238 ci)
V6 to tow this?

My first reply was:

Unless the trailer has been vandalized, the label is on the outside,
left front. Do you have any concept of what a tow rating is? If
not, DO YOUR HOMEWORK. This thing with a 3.9l engine - does it have a
manual?

If all you want to do is move it a few miles and park it, a
1/2 ton pickup with a weight distributing hitch would be
fine. A 3/4 or 1 ton pickup would be better of course as it
may be able to move it with just the platform hitch and no
weight distributing bars.
Any engine, all the way down to the six cylinder models of
1/2 ton pickups, would be enough to pull it for just a few
miles but don't expect them to pull it up long, steep grades.

With no stuff and no fluids in it, and for a short haul, I would say
any 1/2 ton pick up made by Ford, Chevy or Dodge...
I would not advise taking it on a freeway....

Reading your post a little more carefully <g>, I'll offer
this advice. You can safely tow this trailer with most any
1/2 ton pickup. Among the older trucks small engines, the GM
4.3L V6 engines are probably the most able. A weight
distributing hitch is a must and a single friction sway
control will be an added safety factor. You can use a model
without a tow package as well as you add the equivalent
accessories. You need a platform hitch along with a service
plug with a brake controller. An absolute must is an after
market transmission cooler.
Make sure the electric trailer brakes are in good condition
and make sure the wiring harness to them is is also.
Regardless of what truck you pick, you need those brakes to
stop safely.
To those not in agreement with me, I'll offer the *fact* I
towed a trailer 8' longer and 2,000 lbs heavier with a '96
Sierra club coupe with the 4.3L engine. We made the trip
west from the Raleigh area to I-81 via I-40. The long grade
in the mountains was done with ease.

Along with the suggestions others have gave, I recommend reading this
article published by "Pop Up Times". It references is for Pop-Up trailers
but the 'rule of thumb' it suggests can (and should IMO) be used by most
towing scenarios.
http://www.popuptimes.com/archives/ruleofthumb.asp
It also gives good definitions of weights, towing limits, etc. for
beginners.
