OK, maybe this group has some insight.. tried alt.home.repair and
alt.hvac..
The question is about a 40lb propane tank..

Bought a 10,000 BTU Blue Flame vent free heater as a backup for
 my
.
I yanked the regulator / hose from my bbq to see how the unit
behaves and  performs.. nicely..

I went out and picked up a new 40lb (10 gal) tank, had it purged
and filled  and swapped it for the 20lb BBQ tank.

I cant get the unit to run.. Pilot lights but blows out by itself
after a few seconds.. I suspect its a pressure issue, but am
 unsure.

Does a 40lb tank have a different PSI than a standard 20lb BBQ tank?
If so, does the "run of the mill" BBQ regulator do something different
with the 40lb tank? Is my old BBQ regulator shot?
Swapping back to the 20lb and no problems.

Thanks !

Both tanks should carry the same pressure since they are both the same
gas (propane).

I don't fully understand what you are saying so I'll take a
guess.........

Your regulator should work on both. Is the tank valve wide open? Is the
tank full? Are you sure? Ok, now check them again.

Do both tanks work on the BBQ but only the small tank works on the
heater?

Are you holding the pilot light on long enough to heat the sensor?

Also, you may have air in the line.  I have a Blue Flame ventless heater
connected to my motorhome propane tank with an 8' hose.  When starting after
it has been shut down for awhile, it sometimes takes awhile for the pilot to
light and stay lit.  You don't say how long your hose is but this could be
your problem.

How well does your grill work on that tank? If the flame on that burner acts
like there is too much pressure, then it may be the tank was over filled, or
still has air in it. Let it run on the grill for a while and see if it
settles down. Some devices are more sensitive to propane pressures than
others.

Bingo! .. "or still has air in it" got me to thinking. It was brand new
and
purged then filled by a teen at agway.  Rather than dig the BBQ out of

storage I took the tank and hose out back and opened it up. The gas
smelled weak.. Let it blow for a few mins and it got stronger.

Put it back in service and its slightly weak but running OK. I figure
the
fellow purged it like a 20lb and left a bit of air in there..

Thank you very much for the suggestion/advice..

Mike
