GB in NC is back (long post)

GBinNC - 14 Nov 2005 17:30 GMT
Greetings, fellow RVers (and wannabes) --

I've been "gone" from these two RV newsgroups for about a year now
("gone" in the sense that I refrained from posting, although I continued
to lurk every day) and have now decided to jump back in from time to
time. I've also kept in touch with a number of y'all through private
e-mail, and I've enjoyed that and hope to continue it.

The reasons I stopped posting are varied, but they involve some personal
issues -- mainly the illness and untimely death (last November) of my
beloved RVing dog Sassy, as well as some personal and family health
issues that made me realize there's more to life than arguing with
people on a computer screen.

The reasons I'm returning to posting are to provide RV (and other)
advice when possible, to obtain RV (and other) advice when needed, and
to inject a bit of humor where possible. Those of you who already know
me will understand that this mostly involves word play of all kinds, and
especially when someone posts a typographical or other error in which I
can find humor, in either the error iself or the correction thereof.

Warning: I will especially pounce (with a big grin) on those who make
their own errors while correcting those of others. (And I expect
retribution in kind. If I make an error that you find humorous, please
have at it. Nobody will enjoy it more than I will.) Other than that, I
don't intend to be a grammar or spelling nanny -- that would be close to
a full-time job, and I have better things to do.

When I first appeared here in early '99, after lurking daily for several
months, I resolved to stay out of the personal disputes that permeated
both groups even then (involving some of the same people, in fact -- I
guess some folks never change). I managed to stay "clean" for a couple
of years, at least, before I got sucked down to that level. This time I
hope and intend to stay above the fray and will do my best to remember
that people who denigrate and disrespect others personally -- because
they disagree with their beliefs or opinions or for any other reason --
speak far more clearly about themselves and their lack of character and
integrity than they do of their intended targets.

During my hiatus I've visited with several folks I've "met" here and
enjoyed putting faces with names. I spent a pleasant couple of hours
with bill horne at his place, and I overnighted at Harry's in
Tallahassee (he's a nice guy, even if he does enjoy yanking y'all's
chains -- and boy, do you guys ever bite when he does). I visited Hunter
and Brady the week before Brady died so I could say goodbye to him.
While in the Ocala area I had to have my van's rear end rebuilt. That
breakdown was a blessing in disguise, because I got to spend a couple of
nights at Patti's farm in the "RV compound" and saw the eagles' nest in
the front yard and all the other wonderful critters. Most hospitable
people, all. I look forward to seeing them again -- as well as others --
in the future.

By the way, during my trip I went directly from bill horne's to Harry's
-- literally from one political extreme to the other -- and it didn't
cause me the least bit of trouble <g>. Y'all might do well to remember
that behind the blustering facades (on both sides) there are real human
beings -- some of whom are nice folks and cordial hosts to visitors.

Let me reiterate that I have a level 40'-long campsite in the edge of
the woods -- with water, 30-amp hookup, and phone line -- with a nearby
indoor private bath and shower. If you're RVing through central NC -- I
no longer live in the Western NC mountains, remember -- and want a nice,
quiet, wooded spot in the middle of nowhere to overnight, say so and
give me as much notice as possible. As long as you haven't been a
habitual jerk to me or others on the NG, you'll be warmly welcomed. (The
few who have been should know who they are and wouldn't want to visit me
anyway, so that makes us even.) Life's too short to spend time with
obnoxious people -- especially on my own property -- so of course I
reserve the right to refuse admission to such folks.

And although I intend to mostly refrain from the political crap here, I
reserve the right to take a shot or issue a rebuttal when I feel the
urge.

I've also noted a few recent posts in which people expressed concern
that a NG regular might die and the rest would never know. I suggest any
of you who would want the NG to know -- do what I did. In my "locator"
file (which my wife and my best friend/executor know how to find on my
computer) I have a section that lists the people I want notified of my
demise. On that list are the current phone numbers and e-mail addresses
of a couple of good friends on this NG who will presumably post the
news, since neither my wife nor my friend/executor knows how to access
NGs. BTW, this should apply regardless of your age. Young people die of
illnesses and accidents all the time, y'know. It's not just us old farts
who might disappear some day. Everybody here, I would assume, has at
least one off-NG contact with somebody else here. Make sure that person
is contacted if something happens to you.

If anybody wants to e-mail me off the group (which you're welcome to
do), my yahoo address works fine with the obvious spelling correction.
If an earthlink address shows up in the headers, use it without
modification. (I haven't posted since I got DSL, so I don't know what
will show up until I post this.)

All that having been said, let the games resume....

I'll add my name to the list of those who have missed your sense of humor and
wordplays.  I trust that your lurking days are over, and that you will forgive
the inadequacies of my (feudal) efforts to protect the English language while
you were inactive.

On a personal note, I am so sorry to learn that our mutual friend Sassy went on
to the great doggie park in the sky.  It must have been very rough on you and
Mrs. GB.

Feudal? Are you of the peerage? Or is that a futile hope?

No wonder your efforts were inadequate. A result, no doubt, of the
paucity of the education imparted upon you by the "Cambridge Community
College".

Listen, you half-baked product of the Central Joisy Diploma Mill!  If your
memory bank is inadequate to recall Bill P's wonderfully futile attempt, the
STFU.  And I didn't even comment on the "inadequates" since I didn't think you'd

I can relate to individuals that might pop in here, an RV subject
news group, and count the new threads for today being only two and
those are OT, political.

That is, every thing has an RE on the subject except the Two OTs.
Now this does not count Vitos out of context thread that was
actually an OT but not labeled as such.

Then look back, only a few new subject items brought up with an
intended attempt to promote the RV of the news group. But what do
you see , a bunch of negative bull sh.t from the saboteurs of the
news group. Why dont they jump up and say there is another one that
wants out.

All along I have supported the inadequates of the group, but it
seems as a feudal endeavor.

Well I suppose that is what you want.

I see. Note that it is shots or rebuttals that turn a comment,
opinion, or claim into a "fray", and that the shooter or rebuttaler,

Dear BobHatch (or Bob Hatch, whichever),

My name has always appeared in the subject line as GBinNC (like my

I got a joke a while back.  To paraphrase:

A man dies with his dog in a car wreck.  They walk along a rural road, and
come to a neat manicured farm.  They think this is heaven.  There is a man
in a long white flowing robe, and a fancy set of gates.  He asks the
gatekeeper, "Can I come in?"

The gatekeeper says, "Yes, but no dogs allowed."

The man says he will think about it and come back.

They walk farther.  They come upon a modest farm, neat, but not manicured.
A plain man in bib overalls stands out by a wooden gate.

The man asks if he can come in.  The reply is yes.  He asks if his dog can
come, too.  The gatekeeper replies, "Absolutely!"

What is this place, the man asks.  This is heaven, is the gatekeeper's
reply.

The man asks, "What is that other place?"

"Oh, that IS the other place.  We just run people past one last screening
process.  Anyone willing to give up his best friend for some nice gates and
good looking landscaping doesn't get here."

Steve.................. The more I see of people, the more I appreciate my
dogs.

Sorry to inform you, but not all dogs go to heaven.  The big
boxer that bit my wife on the tit and chased the boy on the bike
and chewed the ear of my son all on the same day went to hell.
 I helped.

Dook, on the other hand, did much better.  We adopted him late
one fall when he nested in hay on our lot in the country behind
Washington DC.  He was a homeless English Setter; covered with
matted hair and dirty, hungry, and thirsty.  I took him in,
cleaned him up, watered, fed and kept him over the winter.  He
was MINE in his eyes.  Turns out he couldn't see well or hear
much so he didn't come when called.  In the spring he escaped
and I saw him running down the hill followed by three young
boys.  I tagged along and we all chased him for about a mile.
He was off in the bushes getting up to date on the old
countryside.  I finally called off the chase and we left him to
his fate and trudged home.  He beat us back.  We kept Dook until
he couldn't stand and I had him put away and cried.  There is
more, but I have a tear in my eye, so enough.

In our town (Las Vegas), there is a new law proposed that NO MATTER WHAT THE
CAUSE, if your pet gets picked up, it gets altered before you get them back
and you have to pay for it.  Not sure if it has been enacted yet, or not.
In some ways a good idea, in some ways not.

I said that because it was spew from the poster.  It had nothing to do with
the conversation.  It had no explaining text.  It was a one sentence missile
shot by a loose cannon.  Either the man has issues, strong feelings,
experience with child abuse, was abused, has a child friend or relative that
was abused. or is just a raging person.  Judging by some of his posts, I
would believe it could be a combination of both.

Since he has chosen to filter me, this conversation is closed, as it is
digressing from the original topic.  If he wishes to discuss the matter, he
should start a new thread or see a therapist.

I have had abuse in my family tree, and personally.  I know signs when I see

I can just imagine the reaction, from someone, who get's their prize
pedigree dog back in such condition. I think lawsuit comes to mind. No doubt
a lawyer is responsible for that bit of legislation. Now if that punishment
was tied to a, "that's the third time we picked up your mutt," then maybe
that's a subconscious request for that service.

Don't get me wrong, I think *all* pet dogs should be neutered. But
show dogs cannot show if neutered.

a show mutt that is the result of soooooo much inbreeding that his
life expectancy is 5-6 years.  Have you ever watched the 'show' from
NYC?  What a collection of bitches!

Yes, I like dogs, my LAST one was a keeshond/chow mix.  beautiful,
poised abd he lived into his 17th year.

I don't show my dogs, I even refused to register my Border Collie with
the AKC... so my answer isn't coming from someone who shows or breeds.

It's my understanding that shows were originally started so people
would strive to have dogs with perfect conformation.

The better the conformation the sounder the dog would be.

Reputable breeders strive to always be making a better specimen of
their breed. Once a dog gets a bunch of championships other breeders
want to breed their dogs to him....

I imagine in some way they also enjoy showing...

LOL. You mean the breeders or the dogs?

A few years ago I knew a woman -- actually the new wife of a friend --
who suddenly decided to get into "show dogs." She had never had any
interest in dogs before that -- didn't even seem to like them -- so I
thought it was kinda strange.

But I went to a show, and after seeing how she groomed *herself* and
strutted around the ring, it was obvious what she was really "showing."

After that it made sense, but I still felt sorry for her dogs. She had
no relationship with them at all other than the shows....

The handler/breeder.... I doubt the dogs enjoy it much.  Go rent the
movie Best in Show.... it's a scream.

Nope! It is an excuse to go RVing.  Dogs were created so they could do
agility  or show trials all over the country and that means you need an RV.
If  you didn't have to do that whyinhell would you go RVing? <G>

Yeah, I know about them... but have you ever noticed that judges
always fondle the boy dog's nuts? I suspect neuticles would feel like
ping pong balls.

That was the reason for my good/bad statement.  Both mine are neutralized,
but I can imagine if I had a pedigree breeder that I would be upset.  The
law is aimed at people who don't care for their dogs properly, however a few
innocents will be caught in the indiscriminately snare.

Well said GB. Good to see you back in here.

Sorry to hear about your Sassy. I know it leaves a hole in the soul.
We recently lost half of our B&B team of Beanie and Betty the
Pigeon Patrol Kitties. Betty departed last week. I miss her a lot.

Just wanted to add my name to the long list of those saying Welcome Back.

Will be interesting to see who doesn't offer a greetings but maybe not
surprising.

Put me on the list to welcome you back as well.

I've become very selective about what I read and respond to here, but
I was certainly glad to see your name on a posting!

<snip>

Well, that was interesting.

My sincere thanks to the many who kindly welcomed me back, although in a
few cases "kindly" might be a stretch <g>.

One person immediately challenged me (no surprise there) and then
welcomed me back "anyway." Another claimed that I'm somehow expecting
deferential treatment because my dog died a year ago (wow -- that's the
most significant thing he found in my long post?) and said he'd be a
hypocrite if he welcomed me back -- which actually amounted to a sort of
"welcome" in itself, charitable and genial fellow that he is. Yet
another pointed out that I wasn't missed at all -- but since I don't
remember anything he's ever posted, I didn't miss him either, so I guess
we're even.

As I said, the responses were interesting. And nothing has changed --
but then I already knew that.

So thanks again for the nice thoughts. And just for the record, I never
once felt that I was "run off." I simply decided I had other things to
spend my time on for a while.

Carry on.

I have done so many times through the years.  The thing about Usenet is that
it is exactly like the newspaper and tv news.  You can see them one day, not
see them for four months, then turn it on, and it seems like it is the next
day for them.

IOW, it doesn't change a bit.

I am very sorry to hear about Sassy. We are currently fighting
lymphomia weekly at the NC State Vet School in Raleigh with my 6 year
old Rving pal Galaxy. She is a border collie.

I too have been off the NG and haven't even lurked in quiet some time.
I don't know why I came back recently.... maybe I just longed for the
good old days of adventure and RV discussion.

Reggie,

I am so sorry to hear that.  I hope she can fight it.

I lost my soul mate Brady, a Border Collie, last April of
hemangiosacroma.

Galaxy is a wonderful name.  I wish you the best.
