Planning on going to the south TX area in late Jan without making
reservations. Will we have a problem finding a reasonable priced site
at that time? We have never been there before. Any tips would be
appreciated.

My folks were snowbirds for 14 years and spend much of that time in their RV
in the McAllen area.  I would NOT count on an immediately available site,
reasponably priced or not, if going without a reservation.  You may have to
spend a night or three in a Wal-Mart parking lot or other first-come,
first-served facility while you wait for a "better" site to open up.

Good luck and have fun!

Sorry, you are wrong. We've wintered in the RGV for 8 years and just
purchased a home here (were  were fulltimers for 9 years) There are
still plenty of spaces available without reservations. There are over a
thousand RV parks here. There are always empty RV spaces.  As for
reasonable prices, the most expensive parks here in the RGV are priced
like mid-range parks in AZ and FL.

I wondered if things had changed since we were down that way a couple
of times. We moved from park to park where we had friends we were
visiting from Harlingen to McAllen and there was always an empty site
available. We visited in many parks we didn't camp in and saw empty
spaces in all those too. In fact, some of the parks looked only 2/3's
full. If I ever get back down there it will be without a reservation.
I wonder if any of those parks are ever completely full.

Some of the smaller ones do fill up but it lasts maybe a week or two,
not the entire season.

Parks seem to be the fullest in February, but we have never seen it when
there were not vacancies some where.   The first three years we were down
there the RV section of the park we stayed in was full.  They did have a few
empty mobile home sites that they rented to RVers, but they were just dirt
or when it rained they were mud.  Last year they opened a new section with
213 RV sites.  Without doing additional advertising they expected perhaps 50
of the sites to be in use.  Management was somewhat shocked when 187 sites
were in use last February.  I expect the whole thing will be full this
coming February and perhaps some of January.

If you don't really care what amenities a park has, you will find a place
without a reservation.  If you want the amenities offered by upper end parks
in the Valley, I suggest you get a reservation when coming in January or
February, or you may have to settle for less than you really wanted.
