Subject: New form of car jacking - Not a joke

Please keep this circulating... You walk across the parking lot, unlock
your car, and get inside. Then you start the engine and shift into
REVERSE, and you look into the rear view mirror to back out of your
parking space and you notice a piece of paper stuck to the middle of the
rear window. So, you shift into PARK, unlock your doors and jump out of
your car to remove that
paper (or whatever it is) that is obstructing your view. When you reach
the back of your car, that is when the car-jackers appear out of
nowhere, jump into your car and take off! Your engine was running and
they practically mow you down as they speed off in your car. And guess
what ladies? I bet your purse is still in the car... BE AWARE OF THIS
NEW SCHEME THAT IS NOW BEING USED.Just drive away and remove the paper
that is stuck to your window later, and be thankful that you read this
email.. I hope you will forward this to friends and family... especially
to women! A purse contains all of your identification, and you certainly
do NOT want someone getting your home address. They already HAVE your keys!

Doesn't anybody but me check the Urban Legends page before posting
anything that includes "Please keep the circulating" or "Send this to
all your friends"?

Has anybody ever seen a message that WASN'T a hoax that includes those
prompts?

On very few occasions I have found snopes in error with respect to what
you mention. But to assume they are correct on items of individual
safety or security, I would rather error in favor of the individual
rather than the proclaimed falsehood of an item. If you read their
response closely, they do not totally agree that it would not happen. I
found errors in their assumptions as well.

Any scenario can happen when it comes to hi-jacking cars, including
the one replied to, but I'm like you, that 1 is way down near the
bottom of the list. The more likely hi-jack, as for as my wife is
concerned, would be when she pops the trunk lid to put purchases in.
She would have already noticed the paper on the rear window & removed
it by then. But watch for the hijacker hiding in the rear floorboard!
;-)

Also a glance under the car (especially the truck, it DOES happen) and the
vehicle next to yours as you approach your vehicle.

Damn it!  Why is it that I was never approached by a potential
car-jacker?
Would have given me a little time to practice with my S&W Airweight
.38 SPL CTG  2 inch Chief's Special off-duty piece.
Oh well, maybe next time.

Give 'em HELL, Harry!   :)

Omaha just had a foiled pawn shop robbery that EASILY qualifies for "Armed
Citizen" in the NRA rag.  Two bad guys got what they deserved, one permanently.

Any self-respecting car-jacker would have you drawn and quartered
before you could get your pea-shooter out of your panties.

Why wait? The chances of ever using a gun for protection are about
like winning Mega Millions. Just go out and shoot sombody for practice
like a good little red-neck.

REPLY:   What if she put the groceries in the trunk then got in her car
at which time someone walks by and applies the paper to the back window
.. before she starts to back out ?

This has become much ado about (almost) nothing.

This silly (SPECIFIC) thread reminds me of the story that raced around the
internet a few years back advising that flashing your HEADLIGHTS would incite
an attack from gangs.

Common precautions, taken before even approaching your car, reduce the chance
of such a carjacking to almost nothing.

Also, I can't imagine ANY merchant, or employer for that matter, declining to
provide additional security and/or assistance to a parked car, if the person
asking has the patience to WAIT for such additional service.

When approaching your parked car, be AWARE of your surroundings and have THE
KEY TO THE DOOR IN YOUR HAND.  Open the car door briskly, enter the car, close
the door briskly and LOCK IT.  Buckle-up and promptly - but SAFELY - drive
away.

If, for ANY reason, you don't feel safe while returning to your car, turn
around and walk BRISKLY back to where you were safe.  Immediately report your
concern to the appropriate person.

In these post-911 days, the "bar" where such concern becomes "paranoia" has
certainly been raised a bit.  I'm sure that, just like everything else that's
available on-line, there's a plethora of good advice for those concerned about
carjacking.  Google "carjacking" "personal safety" (with quotes in SAME
search) and you'll have enough to read for days.

          :)

We now return to our regularly scheduled bickering.

Humph. Next you'll tell me that I should stop pulling pull tabs from
aluminum cans to buy dialysis time for children.

I wouldn't tell you that, but I will tell you that you can give them
twice as much each year if you recycle in the whole can and send them
the cash!!

Actually, the reason they do accept the tabs only because they couldn't get
people to believe that such a program was an urban myth. Rather than
alienate well-intended people, a tab recycling program was born.

A small check would be far more effective, and less work for them to handle.
Let the NKF take care of kids, not pop-tops.

Webtv's most prolific and annoying anti-sex fundy troll dimwitted
dave!!!

That's one problem you won't need to worry about that, as your wife
left you many years ago when you weren't able to sexually satisfy her
Apparently two years without an orgasm was just too much for her

When she saw the paper on the back window she would now someone just put it
there so she would make sure her doors were locked and drive away as fast as
she could.
