Nicki Foster - 15 Jan 2006 22:49 GMT This 17 miles of sandy shores is not for tourist...if you ride the beach be sure your seat belt is fastened (15 mph) no golf carts, atv's, utility vehicles, no motorcycles and definitely no CAMP FIRES<>this area is surely not tourist friendly... no fast food establishments allowed...have a fun day.....Nicki

You were speeding in your golf cart without your seat belt fastened while building a camp fire and establishing a fast food restaurant.
How was the beach otherwise? I just spent the weekend on West Galveston, and most of the beach sand had been washed up into the housing additions. I don't know if Hurricane Rita did that or maybe some earlier storm. Looks like they are gradually scraping it back to the waterfront and building new dunes.

Still there?
Jim Redelfs - 17 Jan 2006 01:19 GMT > Anybody know how the Galveston beaches faired with the hurricane? > Still there? I BELIVE everything there is nominal.
My daughter and SIL live in Houston. Over Thanksgiving, they entertained friends from out-of-town. Part of their visit included a day junket to Galveston Island State Park and environs. My daughter did NOT mention any damage and their photos appear to be rather typical beach shots. Anecdotal.

We're still trying to figure out where to go this year, riding on the seawall and eating crawfish still have their appeal even though we did them last year.

I grew up in St. Pete and spent a large part of my adulthood in Houston. I never figured out why anyone would want to go to Galveston. Tar balls in the water, beach that looks like a parking lot. There are much nicer places within a reasonable distance.

My late parents were Texas snowbirds from Iowa. On their back down (or back, I've forgotten) they always seems to stay at Galveston Island State Park. They spoke highly of it.
My daughter just started a residency at Children's Hospital in Houston. They went to the beach recently and weren't particularly impressed. From the photos I've seen, I'm not, either. As such, I'm trying to wonder what it was my folks saw in the place to make it a REGULAR stop each year.

Likewise, I've never understood the allure of said city/island, other than perhaps its historical value?

P.S. Houston isn't much better either, but luckily it doesn't have any beaches unless they're fake.
Randi Williams - 18 Jan 2006 03:42 GMT My husband, myself, and 2 sons ages 8 & 11 made trip from Davenport, Iowa to Bolivar Peninsula in a motorhome, towed our sons small atv's on a trailer during the Christmas break...to our horrors we couldn't even have a campfire on the beach...no one for miles around and signs up no atv''s..we planned for months for the trip...we will never return to that area and will inform all our friends to do the same..the area could sure use some tourist dollars...Randi and Raymond

You sound like the couple we saw in Glacier National Park, headed to Alaska in June 1995, with 1 driving a van pulling a travel trailer and the other driving a van pulling an enclosed trailer with 2 snowmobiles. When we got into Tok 3 weeks later, they were in the same service station gassing up, but already heading south. I ask them about the snow & they said - WHAT SNOW??? Very disappointed! I pays to inquire about conditions and plan ahead. Tom J
Randi Williams - 18 Jan 2006 16:20 GMT You are correct, we should have done our home work before we planned our trip to the Texas coast...but such a desolate strip of beach..we traveled so far, drove through snow..which was our mistake...forgot to mention the people in that area of Texas are so polite and helpful...we will come back...Nicki and family

As an alternative (albeit a bit too late), I can vouch for the north shore of Lake Ponchatrain and the Fontainebleau State Park <http://www.lastateparks.com/fontaine/fontaine.htm> in Mandeville (Louisiana). But, as nearly everyone knows, Hurricane Katrina has severely wrecked that state park and a whole lot more and more :( I'm so grateful for the photographs I have of this park and other parts of that area!
Spouse and I went to Fontainebleau SP for the Holiday Seasons during 2003 and 2004, mainly to ride our bicycles on the Tammany Trace Trail <http://www.tammanytrace.org/>. Alas, we didn't have that option for last year's 2005 holiday season, regardless of "Katrina's" damage. I understand it will be many months/years before the area recovers. I also understand this SP will be used to house FEMA trailers, but I'm not wholely sure of that information.
I KNOW (!) first-hand that the Illiniwek CG <http://www.co.rock-island.il.us/FP.asp?id=146>, located on the Mississippi River out of Hampton, IL and operated by the Rock Island County Forest Preserve (not at all very far away from Davenport, IA -- even on bicycle <g>!), is one heck of a lot better camp ground than anything located on Galveston Island or its near vicinity :) Heck, the same goes for Fisherman's Corner CG (USArmy Corps of Engineers) <http://www.mvr.usace.army.mil/missriver/CampingPage/Fisherman.htm>, too, which is located just up the road (er, east/north) from Illiniwek CG! The Illiniwek CG is located down-river of Lock #14 on the Mississippi River, while the Fishermans' CG is located up-river from Lock #14. Both are very nice and well kept. It's a hoot to watch all the barges.

P.S. Spouse and I camped at Illiniwek in September 2005, and the lack of barge traffic on the MS River was quite noticeable in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, even as far upriver to northern IL.

I wasn't impressed with all the transplanted northerners, either. We stayed at Jonathan Dickinson state park a couple of years ago. It was nice but there was little to do in that area and if there is anything interesting other than the beach, nature and a few landmarks, we failed to find it.
Galveston may well have changed since you were there last. We thought it was pretty nice although we had to be careful for the jellyfish.

Research may find locations that are nice, though. I have no personal knowledge in that regard.
