Any feedback (pro or con) re a Keystone 24' Cougar  (model 24.3RKS)????

We've extensive investigations spanning 3 years, we have systematically
eliminated motorhomes, 5W, and Class Cs in favor of a 24' travel
trailer -- 5' longer than what we used to have.

On paper, the one trailer that meets all the requirements is the
Keystone Cougar.  All I need now is some feedback from anyone who's
owned a Keystone.  What did you particularly like or dislike about the
trailer?

Many thanks!

Mind if I benefit from your 3 years' investigations? Other than the basic
'more', what are you seeking in the 24' that you can't get in the 19'? What
qualities/attributes lead you to the Keystone Cougar?

TIA

Chris,
For nearly 10 years we nearly wore out our 17' Layton TT.  After a 15
yr. layoff, we decided to return to camping and spent several years
looking just at Class Cs and 5ers.   Because of our short height, we
eventually eliminated the 5ers, mainly because most of the cabinets are
out of reach.  One year later, we gave up on Class Cs because it seemed
impossible to find the floor plan we wanted in anything shorter than
30'.

A 22-25' travel trailer seemed to be the most comfortable direction.

With all the negative comments that I've received on Keystone's
workmanship (including the Cougar), I've begun a closer look at 3 22'
trailers -- all 3 made by Fleetwood and with one slide.

Hope this answers your request.

Unfortunately, only a devoted fan.  Digger O'Dell just happened to be
one of my favorite characters so I decided to resurrect the name (as a
small tribute).  You're the first person to pick up on it... if that
means anything  :-)

I neglected to mention that William Boyd alias Hopalong Cassidy was
another one of my silver screen idols.  Any relation?

Could be William Boyd is my real name, no relation, that is a derivative
of my first name, real middle name and last name starts with P as in mu
signature. I was tagged with Hoppy in Vietnam and it stuck. I suppose
because he along with Tom Mix, Rex Allen, Red Rider, The Lone  Ranger,
Tex Ritter and a few more were my idols as a youngster. More than any
was Gene Autry who was child mate of my father in Tioga Texas, for real.

I'm sure some will say they are happy with their Cougars but
we decided to skip them after seeing several with serious
roof leaking problems. They appeared to be poor quality.
Nice layouts in both trailers and 5th wheels but poor
execution on build quality.

This is a base line unit. The way to purchase one of these is with a
fine tooth comb for flaws. The price is one of the cheapest in the
market.http://www.keystonervsource.com/rvinventory_item.asp?id=250810

As a tech who works on these units on a daily basis I would rate them
as overall a reasonable value for the money spent.  As with all RVs,
there can be quality issues.  I would suggest being very careful about
choosing your dealer and getting referals from those who have bought
before you. Foster a good relationship with the service department.

The Cougar is a pretty simple, straight foreward unit, not much in the
way of frills.  If there is a weakness it's in the running gear
(axles, springs etc) but that is also true with many fifth wheels.
As far as roof leaks go, I haven't seen any more with the Cougar than
with other similar units. If you buy a Cougar, or any other unit new
be critical of any quality issues and get them resolved before you
sign on the dotted line.

I had a 2001 model.  It had a double slide. One on the living room and one
on the kitchen.  It had a mid cabin entry. They don't make the model
anymore, but mine burnt up in the driveway just about a year ago now.  The
Refridge caught on fire.  I did well on the settlement, but I was concerned
with Keystones lack of response in fact no response to my questions on this
event.

The insurance company is suing them and the refridge manufacture.  I haven't
heard if they've settled or not.

We really liked ours. But since I bought a real truck (1 ton Dodge Ram 600
dually) I got a bigger 5th.  A Mountaineer by Montana. 34 footer with 3
slides and allotta weight.  We like it too, but we need the second air
conditioner for the Texas summers.
