William Boyd - 20 Jan 2006 20:21 GMT I think the mattress that came with my rig is about as sorry as you could get. It is a standard 60X80" box springs with a thin blanket on each side. The Memory foam ones are so high, like $1,000 a copy. There must be one that could be in the middle for comfort. When I take an afternoon nap on the couch, I think I rest better.

Pepperoni - 20 Jan 2006 22:31 GMT toss the old one and buy the cheapest firm mattress to fit. should be about 100 buckies, then get a 2 inch mattress topper with memory foam. Camping world has them.

Madarilla - 21 Jan 2006 04:05 GMT I don't know where you are, but we are in DFW, TX and there's a place called City Mattress Factory that custom built a short queen pillow top for our motorhome. The price was less than $250 and it is easily the most comfortable mattress we have, mobile or home.

That memory foam mattress is available from Sam's Club for about $500. It weighs 100 lbs, significantly more than an innerspring mattress. You have to consider that in an RV. We have a topper on ours in the RV, and it is heavy, too.

After many unhappy trials with air mattresses, I am quite pleased with my present set-up: 5 inches of dense foam, topped by 2 inches of medium foam, topped by one inch of memory foam. Cover the whole mess with a good quality mattress cover. I bought all of it at an upholstery supply shop, cut to fit, for about $250.

I remember when you got the mattress, you posted about it then. But I forgot who it was and how it was constructed. I knew it would take an act of congress to get a good mattress in to the 5er. I have been doing some measuring and it appears to not be impossible to get a complete mattress in to position. Did you make any attempt to do so before you took the piece at a time rout. I appreciate your information. :-)

It is easier to make the beds. Being single, I don't need the entire bed usually. I use two matching twin bedspreads and just leave one side covered Keep both tightly tucked in the middle seam and just throw back the spread on the side I want to use. Morning makeup is simple, straighten the sheet and flip the bedspread (still tucked into the middle seam) back into place.

No box springs > just a mattress. Closet on one side built in night stand on the other. Haha. I had a problem deciding how to sleep with a 6 foot box. Even a small twin is too long to fit. I just carry my mattress topper and a minus 30 rated sleeping bag for winter emergency. Thats a hefty bag. I push the bag into its stuff sack, roll the topper around it and use a poly trash bag a a stuff sack for the whole roll.
No winter this year, fishing season is here, so I installed the "kitchen" in the Ranger. An electric (12v) Coleman cooler and 2 matching color coordinated milk crates. (One for staples and one for the Hibachi and charcoal) I like to take off on a whim, fishing and exploring.. Nice to have the fixin's to make hot soup and coffee or a nice steak.
New awning, too. 5x8 blue tarp was on sale for a couple buckies at ACO.
I was in Springfield Mo for Christmas. I thought to wonder if you were home, but I scooted back north between two nasty storms. Last I heard, you were headed for Texas. I have relatives in Alabama, but woulden't walk across the road to see most of them.
While I was in Mo., I started thinking about buying a lot big enough to plant a mailbox and pour a wide driveway. I would just need a shed building and maybe a couple utility poles to run electric service. Looking at pushers, but really wanting something shorter. It would be nice to have a place in the middle of the country.

That sounds like a good sleeping arrangement and pretty fair kitchen. Reminds me of some I have had in the past. I used a Coleman white gas camp stove for years. In fact that was my only kitchen stove when I was stationed up in Newfoundland in the 50s. Headed for Texas every chance I get but am at a stalemate right now. Sold the ranch acreage and have rebuilt the barn to home base out of for now, but still have to get the new roof on the house so I can sell it and 2 of the 4 acres I have left. That will give a place to stop by in the spring and fall between trips south in the winter and north in the summer. I have family every where so I can have places to visit, fairly well spread out, Maine, Alabama, Oklahoma and Texas.

If I were to add a layer of foam to my existing mattress it would be to thick, and would still have those springs in it. I am afraid I am destine to have to get the entire new mattress. One with memory foam as part of the construction. I understand from some one else here that they use about three different layers of foam at differing density and glue them together. We have had this discussion here in the past, I will just have to quit being a procrastinator and get out there and find a new mattress.

Someone posted on this or the other newsgroup some time ago about a place in Fort Worth that makes beds. I went by there three weeks ago and they are really nice and fit the RV. They are a single mattress with springs and a nice top cover. Just like a regular bed. We bought one for our Mountaineer for around 220.00 delivered. It was so good, we bought 2 more sets and a bed for the house.

A little more money I know, but the wife and I both have back problems, mine pretty bad. We are FT and our mattress was starting to wear down a bit and we replaced it with the RV sized Select Comfort Air Bed. Very comfortable, and they do come in the Queen Short used in many RVs.

I didn't do this all at once. I bought the stiff foam in El Paso, the memory foam somewhere in California, and the medium foam in Austin. Actually the memory foam was salvaged from one of the more expensive air mattresses that failed.
But you can get it all in one place, and save the travel. :o)
Just go down to the upholstery shop and start stacking foam until you get the combo you like. As a last resort you can always cut it in half to get it into the bedroom and glue it together. They have some great glue.
But it bends pretty good in the queen size.

What really surprises me is that it indicates a STANDARD-sized Queen bed. Almost all of the rigs I've looked at include a "short" Queen. I recall they're 60x74-inches.
Do folks with SHORT Queen beds have to buy special linens?
Virtually the FIRST improvement I made to my camper when new was to replace the factory "mattress". What a piece o' dey CRAP!!
In fact, I left it at the dealership and towed the trailer directly to the furniture store where I purchased a Simmons Beauty Rest. It was a little awkward at the loading dock as the rig was parked a short distance away. I asked the delivery man to help me load it into the camper. He did. It was close but no folding necessary.
Mrs. MacWidow (my wife, Leslie) claims to sleep better on the camper bed than our (good) queen in the house. That figures...

Until you get into upper mid-range RVs, virtually all have "short" queens. At least, that is my conclusion after looking around a lot.

The TT has two of the longer rigs with the 60X80 but all others have the smaller 58X74.5. In the 5ers it appears as though there are more with the large size as compared to the TT. http://www.northwoodmfg.com/2006/nash_trailers.htm
The Nash seems to offer several sizes of mattresses but again only the longer ones gets the big bed. http://www.northwoodmfg.com/2006/nash_5thwheel.htm
But the Wildcat by Forrest River has the large bed in all the 5ers and the smaller one in all of the TTs, dont make sense.

Do they even make fifth wheels that cheap? If anything they are getting more expensive. We were just at a small RV show and anything that didn't appear like it would fall apart over the first reilroad crossing it encountered was well over $40,000. That doesn't account for a truck that has to be at least $30,000 and probably more. If I were to replace our 2000 Kountry Aire and Freightliner at today's retail prices, It would cost about $300,000. Class A's are cheaper than a good fiver and truck.

RVsonline has about sixty used mhs over $300K, with most over $500K. You're right on the money about a Kountry Aire and Freightliner, since they list those, purchased used and separately, for $295K.

After visiting a couple of RV shows, I was surprised with the number of very nice Diesel pushers available for under $200,000. If one already has the toad and has no other preferences between trailering or motorhoming, IMHO,in general, a motorhome seems to be a more economical purchase.

I couldn't stand the mattress in our Class C. Husband liked it. So we went out and bought a Dual Zone Aerobed. Cost $219 (Had a 20% off coupon). Now we are both happy and the weight of the Aerobed is a lot lower than the other mattress. We have to deflate it and roll it up and put in the house in the winter when we have the heat off in the coach, but that's okay with us. We put 2 twin foam toppers from Wal-Mart on top of it to because the cold from the underside of the bed came through the bed.
