The Dumbest Drivers Live Here

Beware the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states! The nation's dumbest
drivers live there if the GMAC Insurance National Driver's Test is
right. The startling results: Nearly 20 million Americans--that would be
one in 10 drivers--would fail their state driver's test if they had to
take it today.

In addition to surveying them about their general driving habits, GMAC
gave its 20-question test to more than 5,000 licensed drivers between
the ages of 16 and 65. Those who live in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic
states did the worst with 20 percent failing the test.

And of these states, Rhode Island scored the lowest with an average test
score of 77 percent, just barely above a failing grade of 70 percent.
Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, and the District of Columbia were
just ahead of Rhode Island with the lowest scores in the nation.

On the other hand, the most knowledgeable drivers live in Oregon with an
average score of 89 percent, followed by Washington, Iowa, Idaho, and
Wyoming.

And that's not even the scariest part of the survey. The results also
suggest that many Americans find standard driving practices troublesome,
including merging, failure to yield when making left turns, and
road-sign interpretation. In addition, many may not take such important
topics as drinking and driving seriously enough. Twenty-nine percent of
drivers (57 million) who drink admitted they would knowingly drive while
over the legal limit "if they felt okay."

General driving safety knowledge: Where Americans are most lacking is...

    * Drivers 18 to 24 years old are most likely to fail a written
driving test (78 percent passing rate); drivers 50 to 64 years are most
likely to pass (85 percent passing rate).
    * Drivers in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic are the least
knowledgeable; one in five were unable to pass the written drivers test.
    * Drivers in the Pacific Northwest and Great Lakes are the most
knowledgeable with a failure rate of just 1 to 3 percent.
    * At least one out of five drivers do not know that a pedestrian
has the right of way at a marked or unmarked crosswalk. This is of
special concern considering that drivers in urban areas are among the
least knowledgeable in the nation.

Zoom, zoom, zoom!

    * One out of three drivers claim to speed up to make a yellow light
even when pedestrians are in the crosswalk.
    * One out of four drivers would roll through a stop sign rather
than come to a complete stop.
    * Drivers in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic are the most likely to
speed.
    * Nebraska's drivers are the least likely to exceed the speed limit.

More bad driving habits

    * Half of Americans report that they do not know how to merge into
heavy traffic.
    * 60 percent of Americans say that they change lanes on a highway
without using their turn signal.
    * One-third of Americans have packed their car so tightly that
their vision was obstructed.
    * 17 percent of Americans have driven without a rear view or
driver's side mirror.

Hey, be careful out there!

My only concern with ranking according to test scores is with the tests
themselves. Are they standardized? or does each State have it's own test? If
they do, then comparing scores is just about futile.

As Mark Twain said, ' there are lies, damn lies, and then statistics'.

I'm no fan of AARP, but I do use them for 1 service. The program, 55
Alive is an 8 hour driving instruction classroom course that cost you
$10 and is recommended to be taken every 3 years. We started taking
the course about 18 years ago and have taken it every 3 years since.
You'd be surprised how much you can forget about rules of the road as
you get older. The link to find a class near you:

people. INteresting.

So basically they are saying that Yankees can't drive.  I've known that
for years.

Naw, it's only because we Yanks know where we're going, and all them Rebs

It's crazy to me how many poor drivers there are out on the road these
days.  Defensive driving has become key in my opinion.  I have heard
some good reviews about the AARP driving refresher as well.  Thanks for
the link!

here in droves.  Its the War of Northern Agression all over again.

LOL. The strangest thing is how so many of them come down to NC to
retire and tell all their friends back home how wonderful it is, so they
come too. And then a few years later, they complain because it's getting
so crowded here.

Well, duh.

The worst drivers come from Massachusetts, hence the nickname "Massholes".
Not only will they put you in peril cutting you off but then they'll flip
you the finger!  I live on the NH/Ma border and most of the accidents here
involve them.

A good friend of ours who grew up in Camden, ME, agrees. She says
tourists with MA license plates are the ones the natives there fear the
most.

Yep, Lived in Pembroke, NH for the last 25 years till we retired and it's
the transplants from away that will kill you.....

Trouble is there are so many MA people moving to NH that they are starting
to influence the way the locals drive. Pretty soon they will all be driving
like Storrow Drive on Friday afternoon!

They should be careful with the finger when they come to Texas.
By the way, the "unofficial" rule in Texas is "the far right lane is
to be used for reloading".............  :-)

I have visited friends in Harlingen several times and they are always saying
beware of those @#$%^ "Winter Texans," as you never know what they are going
to do.

OK....

Here goes - just received this....

message for all men

I was riding to work yesterday when I observed a female driver
cut right in front of a pickup truck, causing the driver to have to
drive on
to the shoulder to avoid hitting her.

This evidently angered the driver enough that he hung his arm
out his window and gave the woman the finger.

"Man, that guy is stupid," I thought to myself. I ALWAYS smile
nicely and wave in a sheepish manner whenever a female does anything
to me
in traffic, and here's why:

I drive 48 miles each way every day to work.

That's 96 miles each day.

Of these, 16 miles each way is bumper-to-bumper.

Most of the bumper-to-bumper is on an 8 lane highway.

There are 7 cars every 40 feet for 32 miles.

That works out to be 982 cars every mile, or 31,424 cars.

Even though the rest of the 32 miles is not bumper-to-bumper, I
figure I pass at least another 4000 cars.

That brings the number to something like 36,000 cars that I pass
everyday.

Statistically, females drive half of these.

That's 18,000 women drivers!

In any given group of females, 1 in 28 has PMS.

That's 642.

According to Cosmopolitan, 70% describe their love life as
dissatisfying or unrewarding.

That's 449.

According to the National Institute of Health, 22% of all
females have seriously considered suicide or homicide.

That's 98.

And 34% describe men as their biggest problem.

That's 33.

According to the National Rifle Association, 5% of all females
carry weapons and this number is increasing.

That means that EVERY SINGLE DAY, I drive past at least one
female that has a lousy love life, thinks men are her biggest problem,
has
seriously considered suicide or homicide, has PMS, and is armed.

Give her the finger?  I don't think so...............................
