Small motorhomes with good fuel economy

C. J. Clegg - 11 Feb 2006 19:19 GMT I have a 1991 Winnebago Warrior 21-foot motorhome, the one that's based on the Toyota cab and chassis truck. I am considering selling it and getting a new motorhome, and I would like one that is comparable in size to the Warrior, and comparable in fuel economy (14 mpg).
Winnebago had the Vista and the Itasca equivalent (I forget the model name), but those were discontinued and anyway I heard that the reliability of the Volkswagen drivetrain in those motorhomes was pretty poor.
Winnebago now has the View and the Itasca Navion, both on Dodge chassis with Mercedes diesel engines. But, I am not so sure I want a diesel ... the price gouging oil companies have somehow made diesel fuel more expensive than the highest premium gasoline and gotten away with it ... and anyway the driving position in the View (and I assume the Navion though I haven't seen one of those yet) is very uncomfortable due mostly to no adjustment of the steering wheel and no plans from Winnebago to ever offer that according to what they told me.
So, what else is available out there in that class of motorhome? So far I haven't been able to find anything.
Thanks...

I was going to offer some advice, but immediately abandoned the idea when I got to you lame-brained remark about "price gouging". I have learned the hard way not to try to help morons.
No point in discussing it, but you are dead wrong on that issue and therefore unlikely to profit from good advice.

Yeah, I specifically put that in there to see if I could bait you.
Thanks for not disappointing me! :-) :-)
I actually haven't been around the RV groups much the last couple of years. Glad to see you haven't changed any. This place would be so dull without Will Sill around to show us the errors of our ways! :-)
I notice you don't sign with your ham radio call sign anymore. You're not off the air, are you? I wouldn't want the other hams to be deprived of your wit and insight. :-)
Jayseebee - 12 Feb 2006 16:22 GMT You might want to check out Roadtrek and Pleasureway. We had the Roadtrek 190 Popular for a few years and loved it. It had the twin beds in back with all the ammenities of a larger MH shrunk into the 3500 Dodge chassis with raised walkaround room roof. We used to get 17.5 mpg hy with the 318 dodge eng it had then. I think the 360's still do that well? We used to spend over a month at a time in it traveling. We have also seen others towing a small dingy with theirs!!

Before this thread degenerates into the usual pointless name-calling, I'll second another poster's suggestion that you look at the Provan Tiger CX (www.tigermotorhomes.com, IIRC, or google).
It's smaller than your Toyota, but not by a whole lot (19'). It's available with 4WD, and several engine / tranny combos. The 6.0L is plenty peppy, and I'd expect a real-world mileage of ~14-15 mpg, maybe a bit better. Or there's a Duramax & Allison option.
No dealers at present. If you can get to Columbia, SC, they're just south. Or call the factory; maybe there's an owner nearby that'll be accommodating. Used ones are very scarce.
I've been to the factory, driven the demo, liked what I saw, and have a deposit on an '06 4WD. The climb-thru is a bit tight, as is the bathroom door, but both are do-able.

I wouldn't be surprised that it turned in only 12-13 highway and perhaps a low as 10 in town.
Hey. It's better to be PLEASANTLY surprised than UNpleasantly surprised. The 6.0L (Vortec 6000) is a great engine but, when hauling around a big camper, is plenty thirsty.
> Or there's a Duramax & Allison option. I believe that the Allison is available as an option with the 6.0L engine. If I'm right, it is WORTH the price. That is one amazing tranny.
> The climb-thru is a bit tight, as is the bathroom door That's the "price" you pay for the privilege of parking your motorhome closer to the Wal-Mart rather than out at the far end of the parking lot.

Jim - 13 Feb 2006 20:41 GMT FWIW, I just noticed a used Tiger CX for sale... '04, Duramax, 4x4, extended cab, 15,000 miles, in LA, Ca.
The only way I know to contact the seller is to go to the Forums at www.rv.net, sign up, go to the Camping Van Conversions Forum, to the thread on Provan Tigers (1st page), and look for a recent post by 'Sealife' (no email address provided). Dunno if it'll stay up; it may violate the forums' rule on FS ads. But you should be able to PM him thru their system.

Too late, the post was deleted this evening. You may still be able to PM on RV.net, tho', under the 'Sealife' username. Or I guess there's the _very_ remote possibility of finding him somehow in the LA area; his name is Mike Brodey, according to his RV.net profile.

You quote C.J.Clegg then, in your reply, lecture "WILL". ...or did I miss something?
