Cell Phone as Modem

Does anyone out there use their cell phone as a modem while tethered to
a laptop?  If so, what service, and what cost?  Cingular now charges up
to $60 additional for data service.  Goodbye Cingular!

Yep. Through Alltel. No extra charge, just uses my regular minutes (free
at night and on weekends).

I have a Motorola V262. I had to buy the proper cable, of course, but I
Googled and found it online much cheaper than I could have gotten it
from Alltel.

I don't need to connect that way very often, but every time I've done so
it has worked perfectly. Slow as heck, but no problem with it. I have it
set to dial the same "local" Earthlink number I would use at home if I
were on a dialup account -- which I'm not because I have DSL.

Thanks for the great reply.  We have kissed Cingular off, and now have a
V262 phone with Alltel, and with their accelerator program it works
better than ever.  Thanks again

I'm glad I was able to help. Travel safely, and happy RVing.

I don't, but I believe Sprint also will charge for data if they suspect
you're using it that way. I've seen information to that effect on some Treo
forums. If it's irregular, I don't think it would be noticed, or they don't
care if they do.

Alltel obviously doesn't care. It even shows the call on my bill as a
"data call."

Data calls are treated the same a voice calls with Verizon, so it just
uses your minutes. Nights and weekends it's free.

As with the other providers, you can buy an unlimited data package from
Verizon for $60/month.

If you can tolerate the Able Henry moderator, there are some tutorials
on the Yahoo InternetByCellPhone forum.

What Dapper Dave said about Verizon.  I use a Motorola V60 with an
office kit to connect to a Toshiba laptop USB port.  It uses my
regular minutes with no additional charges.

Ditto for me with an e815, main difference is I went to
www.nuclearelephant.com and downloaded the e815 drivers, and get 1x speeds
now, in addition to the Q2N speeds. (they have driver packs for lots of
different phones)

Download speed varies from abysmal to 144 kbps, 90% of the time between
60 and 100 kbps. The best performance is on large downloads of single
files, where 130-140 kbps is common. Upload speed is usually around 60
kbps.

These speeds are a little misleading when used in reference to web
browsing, though. The high latency involded in cellular connections
means that it takes longer to load a web page with a good cellular
connection than it does with a good dialup connection. A single web page
usually consists of dozens of widgets, each of which is downloaded
separately. It takes the cellular connection a long time to start each
one.

Much faster.. It's 1x... average 80-120 kbs, bursts even faster

I use a cellular broad band card.  It work almost anywhere.  Connects at
214Kbs, the new G3 are faster.  The card was about 100.00 when I got it and
the service was about 80.00 a month for unlimited access thru Cingular.

Good info in the whole thread.

What software program does everyone use when they connect their mobile phone
to the laptop?

I have the new V3 and I can get the cable from Motorola but the program they
recomment has the internet connection disabled for Verizon users (I am one)

The cable comes with the drivers on CD. Follow the directions to install
it, or let it do it by itself.

Be advised, however, that there is a program that may be installed
automatically (at least mind did) from the CD that monitors your
activity or whatever. It seemed like just part of the drivers, so I
didn't pay much attention then. But I found it out about it later and
uninstalled it. I can't remember the name now, though -- sorry. Maybe
somebody else can.

You don't have to use any external software to actually connect. Just
set up a "Dial-Up Networking" icon for the cellphone as the modem and a
maximum speed of 19,200. Enter your regular user name and password and
the number to dial, hook up the cable, and let 'er rip.

Just an aside.. You may be able to have 1x speeds (bursts up to 144). Some
accounts have Enchanced Network Services (called different things in
different markets), and use phonenumber@vzw3g.com password vzw as a logon.
You also may need the drivers (manufacturer/various other sites/ or
www.nuclearelephant.com )

PS, will try it with EVDO next week when I am in an EVDO area (Vegas =
Disneyland for Adults.... Only way I can be an adult! :) and let folks know
if that works also...

You should check on Verizon's web site for their Mobile Office Kits.
They have the driver and cable and the set up is quite easy. If you
can't get a mobile office kit, join InternetByCellPhone on Yahoo groups.
(Be certain to use the capital letters where I did.) They have tutorials
in their files that will walk you through the set up for Verizon, Sprint
and Cingular. Save yourself some grief at the hands of the not very nice
moderator and just download the tutorials before asking any questions on
the group.

I have to wonder why people always want to do things the hardest way
possible....  There are many website with the drivers for the phone(s) (I
have an e815 but my roomate has a v3).. Just download the drivers.. install
em.. and with the phone/cable connected, just add a dial up networking
connection (comes with windows).. you don't NEED any extra software! I/we
have an in house network, and can even use the cellphone, over the network,
by any computer connected to the network. (that ability is blocked by
software from some vendors). Since my PDA is WiFi enabled, I can even use
the cellphone as a modem for my PDA!
You can even install two different DUN's (I have 1 for 14.4, the 2nd for 1x,
and next week i'll be in an evdo area and add a third)

OK, so where do I get the driver for my V3?

Due to the plethora of links (some of which work and some which don't), best
advice is to go to www.howardforums.com and got to the specific forum you
want and read the messages with links (and or look in their download
library).. Or just go to the motorola page for diferent models, click on the
correct model, and then downloads...
http://direct.motorola.com/ENS/phoneselect.asp?language=ENS&Country=USA

Be aware, there is a V3 and a V3c.. be sure you get the right one.... Can't
give you a specific link since I think the model # is wrong.. Hopefully I
pointed you in the right direction...

You know that users on the Yahoo e815 forum have reported being charged
for using EVDO, right?

I heard they were charged a monthly rate for the month they use it, but not
for when they don't.. Since I live in a 1x area, but am gonna visit vegas
(evdo area) for two weeks, I can just play a few less slots and pay for the
evdo access for a few weeks.... :) (Wonder if gambling costs more than a
month of evdo access?)
