April trip - Cape Cod?

I posted this over in RORT, I guess everybody is too busy arguing politics
to actually answer an RV related question <g>.
I have a week off and a burning desire to get on the road and away from this
desk, get the 29' fiver on the road again.
My wife thinks Cape Cod would be nice (I have no idea why except maybe the
name is familiar).
This would be for the week of Apr. 16. There's a state park that is open at
that time; Shawme Crowell State Forest, has anybody stayed there around this
time of year?
I checked and the average high is about 53F in April, with the low being
36.6., I don't mind the cold all that much but am thinking of heading
further south
to avoid freezing temps (I live outside Ottawa, Ontario, Canada).
Thoughts on this plan or suggestions on where to go that week would be
appreciated.

Hi Tim,
You may find that it's cooler then what you say too.  The weather
there can change pretty quickly. Be prepared for spring and winter.  The
big thing about Cape Cod is the beaches/seashore, whale watching, old
buildings etc.  It might be a might early in the year to enjoy them :)
You will have a lot of room though since it will probably be all locals.
There are a lot of web sites on Cape Cod that you might want to check
out.  There are lots of towns to visit for sure.

You might not have gotten any responses because no one had any
information to offer.  I myself haven't stayed up there in April, to
cold.  If you are looking for warm weather you have to go a few hundred
miles further south.  It snowed on the Virginia/Tenessee border this
past weekend for example :)  It should be pretty nice from southern Pa.
south in mid April.  Could be nice along the coast too depends upon
mother nature.

Take care and Happy Campin...

Thanks Rich,
With only a week (less actually 'cause we can't leave until the afternoon of
the 16th and want to be back on Saturday the 22nd) we don't want to be
driving the whole time, might have to chance it or move further inland where
the temperatures seem to be a tad warmer.

The nice thing about going at that time of year is that you won't have the
hoards of tourists.  We also went to Nantucket with our bicycles but it was
in the summer and it was scortching. The weather should be about 2 weeks
ahead of Ottawa.  Have a great time. Our plans include 9 days in Ottawa this
summer.

Thanks Richard,
That's one of the reasons we like to travel off-season, less crowding. Two
weeks ahead of Ottawa isn't much of a cushion, can be *very* cold here at
the end of April.
We are west of Ottawa, in Almonte, a pretty little town on the Mississippi,
worth a day's trip, with a really nice restaurant in one of the old mills
that are scattered through town.

I'm pretty sure Bourne Scenic Park is open year round. Most other parks are
closed for the winter. If you find something open, make sure they have water
turned on at the camp sites. You might find some waking up in April. But the
majority tend to open up in May. The Cape is pretty active year round since
there are more full time residents and more services.

Thanks Jim,
Exactly the kind of info I was hoping might surface.

I guess you are right about RORT they spend a lot of time on
things that I thought should be secondary. At that one
cannot just set there and wait for an on topic subject.
Maybe most of the folks are full timers and are preparing
for their migration north. I am in mid MS and think it is to
cold here let alone in Cape Cod. I did not respond over
there because I have no idea about that part of the country.

No Bourne is not open all year round anymore. There is currently no Cape Cod
campground open all year. I am unhappy about thi because I like offseason camping.

There is one (can't remember the name; one of the privates around Wellfleet)
which by prior arrangement will let you stay in winter. No facilities except
sewer and electric though in winter, and no bathrooms.

When does Nickerson open?

Several years ago I camped at Sweetwater Forest in February, when they were the
only year-round campground in C.C. They even had self-draining freezeproof water
spigots, as long as you followed their warning to not leave the hose connected
when not in use. It was fun in its own way. I have memories of standing on the
pier in Provincetown, 20 degrees and barely being able to stand up in a 40 mph wind!

April sounds like a great time in the Cape, as long as it isn't raining. The
Cape in summer is miserable unless you just use your bike to get around and
don't try to drive anywhere.

David,

There are two campgorunds that we winter camp at on the Cape.  They are
Shawme and Scussett Beach.

Thanks Paul,

Those are the places I was looking at. Would reservations be necessary?
flansp78@hotmail.com - 31 Mar 2006 13:40 GMT
Tim,

It depends on the camp ground.  If you go to Shawme, I would suggest a
reservation.  This is because Nickerson had a lot of storm damage last
year and is still not open, so everyone who would be going to Nickerson
will now most likly going to Shawme.  Scussett on the other hand should
be fine.  To be on the safe side, go to
http://www.reserveamerica.com/jsp/search/name_search.jsp?index=0  look
up the camp ground you want and check to see if any sites are
available.  It is kinda cheap, $9.00, to make a reservation and sites
are in the range of $10 to $20.   Scussett is a nice place.  It's right
on the Cape Cod Canal with biking and walking trails.

Jim,

Bourne Scenic is not open year round.  The only camp grounds in the
area that are open all year is Shawme Crowell State Forest and Scusset
Beach.

Tim, I live near both campgrounds and they both are great places to
visit.  Yes, the weather can turn and be cold, but it's great here now
with the temps. in the 60's.  Weekend will also be in the 60's.  Don't
let the weather stop up.  Shawme does not have electric or water on
sites.  You can fill your tank from one of several water stations.
Scusset has electric and water at the sites, but I'm not sure when they
turn the water on. Electric is on all year.

Come on up, the weather has been awesome over the last couple of weeks.

Cape Cod sucks. Outside of July and August, there is little to do, and
during July and August the traffic is bumper to bumper. The locals
hate tourists but put up with them because they need their money.
There's a heavy drug and alcohol culture - probably the result of
utter boredom. And MA in general must have the highest concentration
of snobs and a.sholes in the nation. I'd head for southern NJ or
farther south where the beaches are nice and the weather is decent
this time of year. You can stroll the boardwalks in a couple of places
like Asbury Park or Wildwood. If you're mostly going to sit and watch
the waves crash, you may as well do it from a spot warmer than the
Cape.

Thanks,
Asbury Park eh? My wife is a huge Springsteen fan, I'm sure I'd be able to
talk her into driving a little further. Can you recommend a nice place to
stay? As you might have guessed we aren't into full service facilities,
state parks are just fine, 'lectric and a nice spot are about all we want.

Tim,
Mapquest says from your house to Asbury Park is an 8 hour drive but you have
to hustle along to make their times.

There isn't much open in NJ in April, either. NJ State Parks don't
generally have any hookups. They don't allow dogs, either. I'd check
with Trailer Life or Woodalls for some campgrounds that may be open early.

I agree, but the attraction was the warmer weather on the Jersey Shore
vs the Cape. Nevertheless - Six Flags opens on 3/31, and Atlantic City
is year round entertainment if you like that sort of thing. And
there's a 4+ mile boardwalk where many shops and eateries will already
be open. I still go to the drag races with old friends at Raceway Park
in Englishtown. Great fun if you like cars. Here's a couple of links
for the OP that may be of use.
