This summer I plan to visit Chicago and travel downtown to the Newberry
Library. I really don't want to have to drive downtown, nor pay for public
parking.  Is there a campground near the Chicago mass transist system that I
can park my car at and travel downtown with?

Thank you..

You can park at may of the NW suburbs train "L"stations and then go into the
loop via the train. I don't remeber if there is a fee to park but if there
is it was low.
Palatine has a station as well as Barrington.

Hope this helps, enjoy your visit.

You're mixing systems.  The train station in Palatine is part of the
Metra system which runs trains from the outer suburbs to downtown. See:

The L or Elevated system is part of the Chicago Transit Authority.

The NW EL line only runs out to O'Hare airport.
Metra and the CTA are separate systems.

You might try Illinois Beach State Park.  It's pretty far north of the
city, but there isn't a lot of camping in the city.  See:
http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/Landmgt/PARKS/R2/ILBEACH.HTM
You could probably catch the Metra in Waukegan or maybe Zion see:

I suspect that you will have to pay to park at the station.  A lot of
areas require permits to park on the streets near the stations and you
will be ticketed if you don't have a permit unless you park in a metered
space.  But parking should be cheaper than parking downtown.  You might
want to check with the Park to see if you can catch a bus from the park
to station.

There are a couple of private campgrounds in the southwest suburbs.  I'm
not familiar with them but you might find them on google.

bruce, there aren't a lot of camping/rv'ing opportunities in the
greater chicago area.  the closest is probably the 'windy city
campground' near tinley park.  there is also a commuter train station
in tinley park where you can catch the METRA train downtown.

There is also Martin CG just a few miles west of Windy City. I've stayed
there twice and prefer it to Windy CIty.

Hey folks, Thanks for all the help. I "THINK" I'll be able to find something
from all the suggestions. I forget to mention that I'd be coming to Chicago
from Springfield, so the southwest would be great. From Chicago, I'm heading
to Madison, WI.

Thanks again..

Bruce,

You may want to try Chain O' Lakes SP in Fox Lake, IL.  It is five
minute down town Fox Lake where you can pick the Metra and go down town
Chicago.

Good Luck
