We like Ouray, which is a little north of Durango, a lot.  'Have never
camped there, but it's a neat town - also with hot springs - and I know
they have an RV campground.

Have fun.  I envy you.

Ouray has several nice campgrounds, most north of town.  Ouray, in itself is
a really neat town.  From Ouray it is a short day-trip over to Telluride.
Telluride is another beautiful mountain town.  You won't believe the
real-estate prices there.

From your earlier message you were considering ways to get to Durango.  If
you choose the Walsenburg-Alamosa-Wolf Creek route, the Great Sand Dunes NP
is very nice.  You will have to camp without hookups but their other
accommodations are first-rate.  An alternate is the San Luis State Park
which is just west of the Dunes.  It does have hookups and you can view the
Dunes from the West instead of East.  The afternoon showers provide some
pretty nice light-refraction shows on the mountains in the background.

You didn't say how much time you have, but Mesa Verde NP is an hour or more
West of Durango.  A good day-trip or their campgrounds are also nice.  We
were there three times when the kids were young and plan to return.  As I
recall you will have to camp 'dry' (no hookups).  We have been to 20 or more
National Parks, monuments, etc. and Mesa Verde is one of the most
fascinating.

Silverton is between Quray and Durango.  Another interesting mining town and
also the North end of the Durango-Silverton train ride.  There are
campgrounds there including one that lets you camp right on the river edge.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison is also in the area.  It is East of Montrose,
which is between Ouray and Grand Junction.  Nice scenery but the National
Park campgrounds can get VERY HOT this time of year.  We were up there a few
years ago and the Visitor Center thermometer read 125 degrees.  Good news is
if you go down to Montrose or farther east to Blue Mesa Resivoir it is much
more comfortable.

In addition to the hot springs at Glenwood springs there is a nice hike
above the town. I believe they call it Hanging Lake.  Not too strenuous but
does yield one of the prettiest, blue waterfall-fed lakes you will ever see.
Millionaireland (Aspen) is a fairly short drive north of Glenwood.

Enjoy.
