2006 Dodge 2500 short bed Big Horn w/ Cummins Turbo engine.

And RED!  Divers flag Red!  What else for an ex commercial diver?

Thought I wanted white until I saw that red one.  A little haggling
............... spray on bed liner ........... full 34 gallons of diesel
............ 15 seconds in a whirlwind chamber of flying paper money (secret
is to hold hands out to block the money and select the big bills to stuff
through the slot, $165), a $50 gift certificate for filling out a survey
(redeemable at their terribly overpriced kiosk of Dodge stuff, but WTF), and
a great salesperson who recognized a shark from a guppy.

I'm happy with the price, too.

Driving to Utah this coming week, and can't wait to see it run.  Will be up
there about two weeks taking care of some construction, and bouncing back to
Vegas a couple of times for appointments.  Need to take it easy, though, and
let it break in.

Thanks for the input from everyone.  Decided the short bed was for me, as I
would be running empty most of the time anyway.  And I am sure I can pull
what I want, and not have a problem with a slider.

I hope it doesn't get too bad.  Two AM Vegas time.  I let the dogs out to do
their business, and had to go to the front of the house and take a look.

I think I'm going to love it, too.

It won't get TOO bad - your cheek muscles will, in time, become accustomed
to that ear-to-ear grin that'll appear whenever you climb in (or even just
THINK about) your truck. <G>

Did you stay with a 2WD or go 4WD?

4wd, as it is the only way to get into the cabin in winter.

Do yourself a favor, and check out the Pullrite "superglide" hitch-
http://pullrite.com/superglide.htm
It's expensive, but the difference in price is probably less than one back
window. No worries, no having to stop, get out, slide the hitch back, etc...

1 quick question, Chris: is the Superglide "field upgradable" from the non-
sliding version?

From Steve's comment, I gathered that he hoped to avoid using a slider but,
if the sliding base could be installed later, this would enable him to do a
"field upgrade" to add the capability at a later date. [Probably just after
replacing his rear window.]

Unfortunately not- it's a pretty involved setup, but it's pretty neat- it is
an "auto-slider" with a cam arrangement- it slides automatically the
farther from straight the trailer is.

Now, your gonna have a problem wiping the smile off you face the first time

I feel two things.

One, I feel like a damn idiot.  I have changed the crank in a car motor.  I
can do a valve job.  I can change a tranny.  But I don't even know what kind
of oil to put in this, or how to change the filters.

Second, utter joy at having a new instruction manual, and that bright clean
neat looking engine to learn some new things.

It's a mixed blessing.

I know that diesels require more maintenance than a car, and more things to
keep up with.  I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and do it.

Rotella 15W40 - 3 gallons.

Far less than you might think - the ISB-E is sorta like the Energizer Bunny
[on Steroids]: it just keeps going and going and going and ...

The oil, oil filters, & air filters a the primary maintenance items and THEY
are relatively inexpensive. The instructions are in the Owner's manual but
here's a tip: the Air Filter is in the top of the Air Box and the Oil Filter
is most easily reached from underneath. <G>

Ford and Isuzu ["Duramax"] filters cost more and those engines require far
more oil. [Ford filters are outrageously priced!]

Other than the Differentials, Radiator, and Windshield Washer Bottle, Mopar
ATF+4 goes into everything else.

If you see a "Water In Fuel" Instrument Panel Light, drain the Fuel/Water
Seperator. [You'll want the engine to be cool/cold since it's right beside
the engine block on the Driver's side - turn the yellow lever to drain out
the water and then close it back up. <G>]

Only the oil.

Wal-Mart (around here at any rate) doesn't carry the filters for the ISB-E
[3rd Gen] trucks.

At any rate, Wal-Mart only stocks Fram filters - which I'll never put in MY
truck. FAR too many Frams have self-destructed and caused serious damage to
the innards of too many Diesel engines to suit me.

Cummins Stratopore or Wix (for a generic - also supplied by the local
dealership) are the only good ones.

You're free to use whatever >you< want - I'm only saying what >I< will use.

Also, the Duramax only takes 9 quarts or so of oil, which is less than the 3
gallons he said the dodge took.

Hmmm, my 04 1/2 LLY Duramax takes 10 qts. My Duramax is quieter than the
Dodge or Ford. It is more powerful (HP & Torque). It has arguably the

Actually it is an American motor made in collaberation with GM & Isuzu.
Until recently GM owned a portion of Isuzu.....

That's news to me. Good news, actually -- hey, maybe I'll be able to
get the GM vehicles that I like, with the Toyota longevity that I hear
about.

Although, my 2002 Sierra 1500 is definitely tougher than my dad's 2002
Toyota Tundra -- I do heavier work with it and have had less problems.
He does drive faster, though. A few wheel bearings replaced (my driving
style could be described as "See something? Run it the hell over.") and
an oil leak were my only problems.

My dad's toyota, besides engine noise/vibration that has become
excessive at the truck has aged, has had a broken rear spring, and a
front spindle that failed while driving resulting in the wheel getting
caught under the door and dragging (luckily he wasn't on the highway).
The seatbelt fails to retract and has been replaced twice but fails
each time. The "check engine" light won't go away (no, I don't know the
code, but two different mechanics say everything's okay). The socket
for one tail light has broken, even though the bulb has never been
replaced -- maybe they should have cheaped out on the bulb and spent
the money on a decent socket. Oh, and the parts are INSANELY EXPENSIVE
-- $1200 for the rear spring, for example. I jury-rigged the light
socket because I'm afraid of how expensive it will be.

I'll grant you, the Toyota's engine and transmission will probably run
for a gazillion miles, but who wants to drive a noisy, vibrating,
unsafe beater for a gazillion miles?

Yea, that GM stuff is really junk.  I drove my '01 Chevy 3500 96,000+ miles
before I traded it off and by then I had already replaced the windshield
wiper switch! <vbg>

Sound like to me that the driver needs replaced not the truck.  Actually, I
don't know that much about their trucks.  I drive around 60 to 80K miles a
year so I drive a Camry for work.  I'll drive it as I have the others I've
owned until 250 to 300K and still get 2000.00 for it and then buy another
new one.  My wife also drives a Camry and she'll driver hers for 10 years or
more and then she'll buy another one.  You can't tear em up, unless you go
outta your way to. Which it sounds like is what is happening with your above
story.

We just returned from a run up to our Cedar City, Utah, cabin.  About 450
round trip with running around.

I love my new Dodge 2500 Turbo Cummins diesel truck.

I really liked when I wanted to get around those semis on the Interstate
quick without passing them a little at a time.  I have my own personal
guardian angel.  I shot past one, and then, as I watched in my rear view
mirror, he had a major tread failure, with chunks flying up higher then 2x
the height of the truck.

But it was a real feeling of power shooting from 70 to 90 so quick.  Haven't
done that in a long time in any vehicle.

Did I say I love my new Dodge truck.

Oh yeah.

Well, it bears repeating.

I think you failed to see the comparison -- I think I'm the rougher
driver. He drives faster, but I take heavier loads, do heavy trailering
(he does none), and I drive with 95% disregard for potholes, curbs,
dirt roads, etc, and my gmc takes the beating sans complaint.

My comparison was with tear-up-ability of two 1/2 ton 4x4 v8 extended
cab pickups, one toyota and one gmc. I believe Toyota knows how to make
the most reliable drivetrains. However, with my experience, I question
their ability to build a tough work vehicle.

My best friend's mom can tell you a Camry story just like yours. I have
no question that a Camry is a best bet for a sedan to last many years
and many miles. I suspect that their pickups, given duty similar to
your Camry, would perform like your Camry.

Anyway, my point was that while I'd love if I could get my next GMC
with the reliability advantages of a Toyota, as long as I didn't also
get the disadvantages, I've found my GMC to be as nearly realiable as
possible, and more so (and safer -- see my description of the Toyota's
failures) than the Toyota.

For the record, I had expected the GMC to have the problems, and the
Toyota to be trouble-free. I chose it because I was much more
comfortable in it, and the price was better. I recommended the Toyota
for my dad because of the reliability, and he was reasonably
comfortable in it. His budget was higher and it's more of a problem for
him to have a broken vehicle than for me.
