Route Planning

I am in the early stages of planning a RV trip from Calgary Alberta, to
Vancouver B.C., with a "side trip" down to Las Vegas.  I can either
cross the mountains directly from Calgary to Vancouver and then down
the coast, or go down directly from Calgary to Salt Lake City, Las
Vegas, San Francisco and up the coast to Vancouver.

Now, two things of importance:  1- Before or after Sept. 21 is a
decision I have to make, since it has an important impact on the cost
of the trip.  (cost of renting a RV).  and 2- I have no experience in
mountain driving.  (I don't consider driving the Eastern hills as
mountain driving). So, if there is any risk of snow in the mountains at
that time of year, I would dearly like to know, or if there is a
clearly better place to cross the big divide.

So my questions are:  Before or after Sept. 21, is there a route that
is clearly preferable to the other one?  Any other comments or
suggestions are welcome.

Thank you in advance.

Have you checked the mileage for your 'side trip'?  My mapping software says
the quickest route from Calgary to Vancouver is 605 miles.  If you detour
from Calgary to Las Vegas and then back to Vancouver by the quickest route
that is 2,701 miles.  By the way, that route doesn't take you through San
Francisco, it takes you through Salt Lake City twice and you won't see the
big pond until Seattle.  Have you thought about going directly from Calgary
to Vancouver and then flying to Las Vegas?

Yes I have.  S&T05 does exactly what you say.  That is why I wrote
"side trip" between quotes.  I realize it is quite a side trip.  The
goal is not Las Vegas, but to include Las Vegas in the trip, as well as
the Pacific Coast. The SO is the gambler, me I'll be more interested in
what nature has to offer all along the route.

Because of the late date (late September), I'm wondering about driving
conditions in the mountains, and whether some places are better than
others to cross the rockies, ans whether the route from Calgary thru
Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, is a good road at that time of year.  .
