Watching TV on Laptop

Has anyone used one of those gizmo that connect to the USB port of a
Laptop, and connects to a TV cable at the other end?

Does it works?  How well? Any bad sides?

I'm renting a RV, far away from home, and it does not have a TV.  While
I don't intend to spend much time in front of a TV, there may be some
rainy evenings . . .

Thanks in advance

Will this be on an inverter or shore power?

Very likely to be on shore power.  Or rather, the RV connected to shore
power, and the laptop and gizmo if need be, to 110V inside RV.  So I
guess it would be connected to the RV inverter.

I have one, however, it plugs into, and is powered by the USB port, so it
doesn't use either shore or inverter power.. it uses the laptops battery
power... :)

To answer your q however, not only does it work fine, but can be used with
cable/sat/etc, and some models even let you display multiple screens at
once/switch betwen em with the mouse..
I use a Hauppauge USB Win-TV (they have several models now, see
http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/prods_usb.html )

Thanks, this is exactly what I was looking for.  Based on what I found
on the web page, I think I will be on business soon.

Why would you run this off of battery power? Even if you're not
fortunate enough to have a built-in inverter (we sure like ours) you
can get a rudimentary one pretty cheap at Wal-Mart or Costco. We use
our laptop with DeLorme Street Atlas so it needs to run for hours on
end; not possible with battery alone.

So I'm not tied down to one place, like I would be with a separate device
that needed to be plugged in.... I can be inside, out by the fire, in a
hammock etc, and watch TV on the laptop (sometimes I even throw a DVD in so
I can watch a movie)...
While some people have a laptop in only one place (like a desktop), some of
us use it as a PORTABLE computer and move it around...

OK, > OK, Petie. I use laptops exclusively -- and so does my wife. We
have Airport on all of them, so we can use them anywhere in  the house,
or even in the neighborhood, and so we can use them in the motorhome or
in the car. But we also use them for more than a few hours at a time,
and we almost always have AC available wherever we are. So it's a heck
of a lot easier to run off the power adapter. To each his own. But
"portable" relates to both types of usage.
