Having an RV problem while heading cross-country can be a frustrating and
lonely feeling.  For those who travel through southern Kansas here are a
couple of good dealers/service providers:

H&K Camper Sales
612 N East Ave, Columbus, KS
(Corner of HW 160 & Northeast Avenue)
(620) 674-3400
http://www.hkcampersales.com/
(We experienced an out-slide relay problem with traveling from Andover KS to
Arkansas a year ago.  H&K was obviously busy; and as walk-in's we weren't
expecting a lot of priority.  Wrong!  Their Service Manager told me he had
all of the service bays full, but if I pulled in behind the service area he
would look at our rig himself.  He did the diagnostics, replaced the relay
and had us on the road in about 1-1/2 hours.  The bill was about $50.  Hard
to beat that kind of attention.)  BTW, this dealer is just a few miles from
the Big Brutus shovel site near Mineral, Ks.

54 Auto and RV Sales
11932 SW Highway 54 / US400
Nine Miles West of Wichita, Kansas (or about 5 Miles West of Augusta)
(316) 775-1646

(I have purchased two RV's from Dave and his sons and they have installed
hitches and accessories on several occasions.  It seems routine for them to
tell us "We can do that for about $X but you really don't need it; or here
is how you can easily fix it yourself."   These guys are easy to deal with
and as honest as they come.)

<snipping details of a good experience>

I dare not say everyone will always get good service on the road  -
and of course most recall their bad experiences with great clarity.

Our experience has been almost always GOOD.  Only once in about 50
years of rv travel have we been snookered by poor service and "held
up" by unfairly high pricing.   While we try hard to be prepared and
keep our vehicles in good condition and therefore don't have many
breakdowns, we've had good, prompt, fairly priced help. We think
anxious hours spent worrying about trouble on the road would be better
spent worrying about important stuff like Wal-Mart's overnight parking
offer.

How true!  I had the exact same type of experience at Rapid City S.
Dakota last summer.

I Discovered that the engine alternator wasn't charging the coach
battery.  Pulled into the visitor center on I-90, thinking I could
find an RV repair place in the local yellow pages telephone directory.
Help came from a curious little grey haired lady attending the center
desk, who asked how she could help.

Not expecting much after I described my needs, her expression
brightened and she told me knew exactly where I needed to go.  She
assured me this place did good work and wouldn't charge "an arm and a
leg".  Her directions led me through obscure back streets to an
automotive electronics service shop that I would never have found
otherwise.

The shop was packed with cars and customers, but in spite of that they
parked me outside the bays and brought out diagnostic devices.  30
minutes after I arrived, plus $20 and a new 15 amp fuse, I was on my
way.
