moved from Uk to USA
have 96 fourseasons and want to tow car with us. I think a tow dolly
with brakes is preffered route. should i go with electric or surge. The
car being towed will be an old TR4 .
I cant see how to use a toad and get the brakes working in such an old
car. Also can I tow an Explorer sport (4wd and 2wd)
thanks in advance for any replies /help

Brit Frank -
Why do you want to put your TR on a tow Dolly as opposed to towing 4 down ?
I have pulled my Healey 100-6 and my wife's Sprite several times.
I used a common tow bar for both and didn't have to mess with a dolly.
I am now towing a Miata (Less expensive, more reliable, Air Conditioning).

Are you sure you can't tow the TR4 four down? Why wouldn't a Brake Buddy,
or similar system, work?

What's the curb weight of the TR4, 2500 lbs or so? Brake Buddy, and similar
systems, are adjustable. Works fine on my 4500 lb Cherokee.

The Brake Buddy does not use the vacuum assist or power brakes
when the engine is not running. I guarantee it will lock up the
wheels on the TR4. Be careful not to overdo it.

If the other suggestions don't work for you, check out the BlueOx
AutoStop (http://www.blueox.us/Brakes/autostop.htm). It will work with
any vehicle that can be towed.

Another is Readybrake http://www.readybrake.com/brake-systems.html
Scroll down and it shows how it works.

Can't be any harder than any other vehicle. Even newer cars have hard to
push brake pedals when the motor is not running, maybe harder.

Tr4 nice .....
Tow dolly is good way to tow.. electric brakes are easiest to control
and adjust for varying terrain. Lots available both new and used.
If you like Tow Dollies, they have a top quality one with e-brakes at
around $2800. You may need an extra narrow one that suits the center to
center wheel spacing on the TR. There are a lot of good ones on the
used market.. wheel spacing, tie downs, chains and lights, hubs and the
standard trailer checklist might be a good idea before buying any used.
Lights at the rear of the TR are necessary in many states, and some
dollies have front end connections to activate the TR lights off the
coach, with dolly lights working as well.
There are a variety of ways to go with toad brakes in the vehicle.. We
like roadmaster Even Brake. or brakemaster, though EB it is a bit on
the bulky side, and fit may be an issue in the TR. Call the tech guys
at Roadmaster 1-800-669-9690 for specs. It is removeable, warranted,
adjustable and monitored from the coach.
Any T Dolly adds around 500 to 900 pounds to your tow load as well.
Explorer Sport.. is it towable 4 wheels down? check the owners
manual.. If so then a toad set with with brakes would be the way to
go.. If not towable. then that also on a tow dolly...
Love to see pix of the TR
good luck
