any trick to using roll pins in pop ups ?

I have a pop up truck camper. Both roll pins have come loose, they are
sort of like little tiny pieces of grooved metal. They move around. I
actually tied some twine and bungy chords around where they are as they
are in an enclosed area of the frame that pops up. The top of the pins
are snug up against the chord raping which seems to prevent them from
poping out, though they don't tilt to the side with the strain of
lifting the top. My last camper had a similar problem with the lift
system which became really bad, so I worry about this sometimes. I
bought some pins at the hardware store, but they either don't quite
fit, or there is some trick to getting them to go in. Any comments or
good web sites on this ?

If they are really "roll pins" they are made from rolled spring steel
and are meant to be driven into place.
