Cruise Control Malfunction

The cruise control on my 2000 Pace Arrow Vision (Triton V-10 engine)
stopped working suddenly.
I suspect a fuse problem, but am unable to locate corresponding fuse
because the Ford manual shows fuse designation diagram that is
completely unlike the fuse box in the cabin compartment of my
motorhome. I tried to check all of the fuses, but had difficulty
reaching them.   I will check with Fleetwood to see if they have
diagram showing fuse designation. In meantime, anyone have any ideas as
to what might be the problem? Could problem be a fuse in the engine
compartment? Problem other than fuse? Thanks.

There should be another box of fuses in the engine compartment.  Black
square box about 6 or 8" square.

Thanks, Frank.  I knew about the fuse box in the engine compartment,
but I thought it was for what they refer to as "high voltage" fuses and
didn't have anything to do with the cruise control.  My Ford manual
shows a "speed control fuse that is supposed to be located in the box
in the cabin, on the firewall, under the steering wheel. That's where
I'm having trouble locating the fuse. Have you ever had a problem like
mine?

No, I haven't.  But there may be two sets of fuse boxen in your cabin.
One for the chassis and one that the coach manufacturer added for
their installation.

There was a safety recall by Ford on my MH with the Triton V-10 to reroute
the cruise control cable.  I had that done by the dealer when the vehicle
was new.

If the safety recall was done there is a fuse just under the brake master
cylinder. Just follow the wire from the switch on the end of the master
cylinder. It is there to protect from short that will start a fire.

I got that done just a couple of weeks ago on my 2000 F250 V-10.
According to the notice, a malfunction might cause a fire.  You
really should look into this.

duane, we had a similar problem on a different chassis/engine a few
years back.  turned out that one of the vaccuum hoses had come loose.
when i popped it back into place the CC started to work again.  a
little black electrical tape kept the hose in place.

My MH on a GM 35 chassis had the same problem. It was the little black
plastic vacuum hose connecting to a round storage ball. I don't even
know if the Ford CC works off of vacuum or even if any of them do any more.

Most newer Fords use servos to advance the throttle. On models up to and
about 94/95 is when they switched over but, on certain models they still
used the vacuum system.
My father had worked for Ford Electronics in Lansdale, PA. He had worked on
the line where the servos were made. I remember he always used to comment
about the servos not being as accurate. They would advance in a 3-5 mph
increment rather then a set amount each time you pressed the accel button..

I cannot at all speak of that particular system, and with modern
electronics some systems can be quite complicated, but some general
comments on cruise systems:

One of the problems I have experienced with cruise controls not
working has to do with the various safety switches that turn the
function off. These are both electrical as well as mechanical. The
electrical switches are on the brake system and on stick shift cars,
the clutch. These are usually mechanical switches mounted on the pedal
linkage in the cab. They are normally open switches that have a
plunger that is depressed when the pedal is in its at-rest position.
There will also be a vacuum switch that releases the vacuum from the
system when the pedal is depressed to be sure that the vacuum motor
that pulls the throttle is released. In one vehicle with an
inoperative cruise I found that by holding the pedal in the fully "up"
position (pulling the pedal towards me using my foot under the pedal)
that the cruise worked perfectly. It then became a mater of just
adjusting the clutch!

Next is to check of a vacuum leak which can be a bit more challenging.
This is because when the system is off (inoperative) the vacuum lines
will be open to atmosphere and difficult to test. Try tracing them
from the vacuum actuator at the throttle back toward the modulator and
then into the passenger compartment to the switches... and good luck
with that. It may be a simple case of a vac line coming off one of its
connectors.

Also check the related electrical connectors on the switches and on
the modulator. Disconnecting and then reconnecting might help. After
that it is time to have a pro check it out...

Be sure to check your brake lights and brake light fuse.
