I am thinking of installing a Banks Stinger Kit in my 04 LB7. This would
include the air intake, the exhaust and a performance chip. Has any one
installed one? What are the reviews? I am looking for an increase in power,
but I do not believe that I will see a difference in fuel economy. Is it
worth the money? Are there better products out there? Any feedback is
appreciated.
Thanks
Dave

A re-badged "Sneezer" - ie. Isuzu - diesel engine often shipped in Chubby
packages.

Bully Dog, Gibson, and others make better products.
If you only want a modest increase, why buy/install a lot of unnecessary
hardware?
Get yourself a Programmer such as <http://www.xtremediesel.com/index.asp?
PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=658> or <http://www.xtremediesel.com/index.asp?
PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=10> and pour on the power!

Let there be no mistake: MANY rigs can and do show
some performance improvement with the installation of
free-flowing exhaust systems - especially older ones, and those
pushed hard in lower gears at high engine speeds. It is hard to
quantify such improvement without a chassis dynamometer, but
it is often perceptible is seat-of-pants measurement.
What I have tried to say on this topic probably wasn't clear. As
a LONG time "car nut" with extensive background in modifications
and engine swaps, and nearly 40 years rv'ing, I just hate to see
people blowing money on stuff that doesn't do what they really
want. Allow me to be very specific:

I have nothing whatever against Banks equipment... I just
caution that there's a big difference between ad claims and
demonstrable improvements. When someone proves that Geraghty
and Estes were WRONG when they proved all this stuff with both
chassis dynamometer and road test work (see _Rx for RV
Performance & Mileage_ - an old TL publication), THEN I'll
quit giving this kind of advice, and buy stuff like it for my
own motorhome.
In the meantime, keeping stuff well maintained and driving at
moderate speeds seems to be good enuf for me!

I know Bill Estes is now publisher for one or more TL magazines, but I've
forgotten what happened to Geraghty. He quietly disappeared from the pages
more than a few years back. Whatever happened to him?

I dunno. My last contact was nearly 20 year ago when I had him rework
the carb & distributor for our GMC motorhome. (It ran better
afterwards).

I'll not add my usual Banks Power Pack comments since it doesn't apply to
diesels anyway but wanted to pass along the latest "ad' puffery" from a
local car dealer.
"...push, pull or drag in any vehicle...we'll guarantee...up to $4000
maximum trade in..."
Ranks right up there with my all time favorite from a local furniture store.
"...one year no interest or 10 percent discount for cash..."
Don't you just love the advertising world???

I misquoted the car ad. It actually read "...up to $4000 minimum trade
in...". While my line doesn't have any more (or less) real meaning than
theirs, theirs is funnier!

My favorite is "no credit application denied"

Not being familiar with that engine... but one of the trucking
(pickup) mag's did a full study of engine upgrades on a couple of
different engines (Ford and GM). What they found would make it hard to
justify (at least for those engines). That being said, the old GM 454
and the old Ford 460 did well from similar upgrades

The LB7 is a Japanese diesel and as such has the capability for considerable
performance increase provided the cooling and transmission is more then just
adequate. With most diesel applications the limiting factor is the cooling
systems being sized for the application with very little to spare. Rudy
