What do ya all do about keeping "ahead" of the weather? If you are
camp9ing in point A an dare planning on going north 100+ miles how do
you check on the weather before you go?

Taking into account that you are NOT using a computer.

TV, radio, cell phone.  How do you check your weather at home without a
computer?

On the road via NOAA wx stations, via CB radio w/wx channels.   Or
call Linus.

Don't worry about what people think, they don't do
it very often.

Radio or TV but they wouldn't give the forecast 100 - 200 miles away.

XM Weather, I have it on my GPS unit. You can get instant weather
anywhere, 10 or 200 miles down the road.

The TV.  In lesser populated areas the local TV station my cover half of
the state.  Last fall we ran from Western Montana to Eastern South
Dakota in a storm.  We checked the local TV every night to follow the
storm path.  After three days we decided to drop South to get out of the
weather, all based on the TV forecast.

If you can receive and understand the broadcast on just one of the 6(?) NOAA
weather "channels" received by this device, it will include information
specific to your location.  Your tax dollars make this receiver work, so
everyone should be using one.

When we're not traveling, an earlier version of the above-linked radio
operates in the house.  Except during the inevitable spring watches and
warnings, the device stays silent.

A question of GPS geeks:  Can you easily learn what COUNTY you are in from
your GPS device/service?  Such information is critical to getting the best
service from the above-linked weather radio.

If you are using Delorme Street Atlas or Topo, yes, there is an option to
turn on county names.  However, on my Magellan Meridian, there isn't any
county data in the maps displayed.

If you have a cell phone you can get the weather a number of ways. One is to
call "4info" and send the text message "w XXX" where XXX is the city name,
area code or zip code. It will send the weather forecast back to your phone.
You can get lots of other info too, sports, news, etc. Go here for more
info:

http://www.4info.net/

Google for "cell phone weather" for lots of other options.

If you have Verizon service, you can get Accuweather on your cell phone
for 4$/month.  I do because my job requires that I have access to such
information.  If you can get to a Verizon store get them to set you up
with the free trial before you sign up.

Matt,

It seems they have lowered the price. You can get it for $1.99/mo now.

Click on More Info. And it is not just for Verizon customers either.

assuming we have TV service we watch the news.  if no TV but we have
an internet connection (wi-fi, cellphone..something) we'll check
weather.com.  if no internet i'll listen to NOAA weather radio.  if no
NOAA radio we wing it.  in fact, we wing it most of the time.  we
don't usually make reservations anywhere and since we're mobile we can
always pick up and leave.

511 is becoming the default three-digit help line for road conditions and
weather.  It should work in most places.
