Hi to all out there.

I am getting ready to purchase a CLASS C Motorhome (less than 10 yrs
old) and size anywhere from 26 to 29 feet.  I'm looking at a privately
held 97 FOUR WINDS w/ 54k miles for about 19k.  Any suggestions,
opinions on this particular model?  Newbie here, any help/advice would
be appreciated!

Thanks,

Alexander.

Yes check with NADA.com and also have a mechanic knowledgeable about
motor homes, check each and every single item on the MH to see if it
works properly.  There is a lot to go wrong and after the sale it is
too late to complain.  If they have nothing to hide they should not
mind showing you the maintenance records and like my dealer did he
let me stay in it overnight and check it all out.  Of course we were
on his property but it did give me a chance to check it all out.

Good luck and Happy Trails.

First and foremost get a professsional to look at it and go over it
and appraise it.  Otherwise, unless you get a warranty that is good,
you can blame only yourself for any future problems.

Every mh owner w/ tell you that theirs is the best; I certainly will!
(Lazy Daze is the best... no question!)
Check NADA for prices, but remember that they aren't always right,
just a starting point.  Also, check out RV.org.  It'll cost you a
small amount to join, but no where near what you are thinking of
paying for your coach!  I wouldn't buy a small appliance or (new or
used) car w/out checking what the Consumer Reports magazine had to
say, RV.org is the Consmer Reports of the RV world!  (I can save you
time... Lazy Daze gets 5 stars, every year).  An LD will also "always"
sell for more than the NADA listed price.  But... you get what you pay
for.

Here are 2 sites that you can get info free:

haring+your+opinion.+Your+input+has+been+incorporated+into+our+rating+report

Good luck w/ your search, remember, you will pay for quality.  Try
your best to ignore pure marketing.  Many manufacturers will spend
money on marketing that they could put into the coach.  They get a
better return on the marketing dollar than the quality dollar.  I'd
rather go w/ quality!

I see where "Kelly" <noladiver@cox.net> contributed:

Really, really bad advice.  Totally incorrect.  Our current rv has 85k
and runs like new.  Several previous rigs have still been running as
new with over 100k miles - including mid-sized class A's where they
work pretty hard.

If abused, any engine will die early - if cared for, most will outlast
the chassis.

Don't worry about what people think, they don't do
it very often.

1950's thinking.  I have no doubts that my 8.1l Workhorse will run to
100,000 miles and probably more.  It currently has 50K and purrs.

I realize I'm talking about a 19' Class B (7800#) and not a big Class A,
but our '95 Dodge 3500 has 173,000 on the original engine without any
engine-related maintenance except for two minor tuneups, a water pump,
and a fuel pump. It's a 318 c.i. (5.2L). It runs flawlessly and still
gets the same mileage as always.

I had the transmission rebuilt at 115,000 because I was about to do a
lot of towing of my enclosed cargo trailer when we moved across the
state. I'm not sure it was necessary, but I was interested in preventing
a breakdown and a delay in the move (since I was moving everything
myself).
