Nice group and friends

I'm looking to buy a used motorhome that needs work, in South Florida

I've been searching high and low for a 30-40 foot Motor Home that the
interior has had seen better days, badly water damaged or similar work
that needs to be done inside, and  I can do most every kind of repairs
and overhauls (limited by my tools and time, and $), and the reason  is
simply that I've been retired with a small pension from the good old
days in the US Navy.  Regular check every month.

I have a disability that doesn't allow me to stay in the work force and
compete for wages anymore, but I can get around to getting things done
on my OWN terms.
 I'm  55 going on 35 (...I think), a batchlor, ex -ironworker /
machanic / musician and it's about time to drag out the old rocking
chair for the most part, and I simply can't afford an  apartment with
utilities etc., whereas I can afford to repair an older motor home, even
with payments, and the rent in the RV parks. The math's good and I don't
owe any debts, in fact I haven't had any debts due on credit for over
ten years. Except for I made monthly payments at a local music store
here in Jupiter Florida, for used speakers for a sound system.

Thus when I wanted to get a loan to buy the motor home I really liked,
they said I that  "NO CREDIT HISTORY", wrong.... my history is that I
don't owe or pay 6-25% on cards or loans etc. like I used to when I
raised kids, their grown and borrow money from me. But in this credit
inviroment if you don't countinue to borrow and owe money, you can't
finance tommorrow

But.... yeah, keep me in mind, tell your friends in the community, you
know a guy looking for project to keep himself busy and won't mind
paying for it.

Check- http://www.craigslist.com in your area. Look in "free" and "rv" ads.

While there is a lot to be gained by buying something in bad shape as you
describe, I strongly suggest you avoid something with water damage. That
likely to be hidden and more extensive than first discovered.

Sounds like you should be in the market for either a Born Free or Lazy
Daze.  They are the best quality rigs out there (acording to rv.org) &
last a very long time.  They are shorter, in the 20-30 ft range.  Born
Free is on the east coast & Lazy Daze is a west coast thing.  You will
find each on the other coast, but they are small... quality minded
manufactures w/ very small advertizing budgets.  Their owners are
their best salesmen.  Find a few & talk to the owners, look for how
many old coaches of what types you see & in what conditions.  It is
rare that you'll find an owner who will not gladly show you their
coach & talk to you about it!
You also will find manymanymany buses that have been converted to
motorhomes, they last forever.  Depends on how big you want to drive,
which very much depends on where you want to go.  I have a 26' Lazy
Daze & want to get into smaller spots, so w/be downsizing to a 23'.
The bigger the coach, the more likely you will have to pay more $$ to
park it, unless you want to stay out west where the boondocking in the
desert is free.
If you get a coach w/ water damage.... be prepared to take the skin or
interior walls off to repair.  That's too much for me to do... might
be OK for you, be easier in the desert where there isn't a lot of
moisture to deal w/ while the coach isn't weather proof.

If your really into serious repair, think tornado's and huricanes. ...
Now think insurance auction. I once bought a current year 26.5 foot
travel trailer that cost about $1000 for materials and towing, for the
purchase price of $1050 Canadian money. The insurance auction was
about 50 miles away, but the towing bill was under $200. After about
100 hours of work followed by an inspection, it was worth about
$14,000.

My current project is a much older 1973, 27 foot travel trailer,
(which I obtained for the cost of towing $50), but I still expect that
after about the same amount of work, and an investment of about $400,
will be worth $2,000 to $3,000.
