Trying to find small, used, cheap travel trailer

Hi,

I'm trying to find a small, used, cheap travel trailer like the header
says, but so far all I've been able to find are trailers much bigger
than what I need, for about $4K and up. I'm thinking about an old
trailer 20 feet or shorter, for a grand or so. I'm in the Atlanta, GA
area. So far I've been looking at rvtraderonline.com, and rvtrader.com
Can anyone suggest places where I might have better luck?

Thanks for any help!

David,

I've found quite a few for friends.  Get on your bicycle and while riding
your community streets, keep an eye in the backyards.  You'd be surprised
how many people will take next to nothing to get rid of a trailer long
stored but never forgotten.

Shop the small 'penny saver' papers.  There
are a dozen at any given time here in No. CA.
that would fit your bill...   Probably only
if your *NOT* looking for one though...  :) :)

Also check the storage lots.  See if the owner would give you the name and
number (or contact them for you) of the trailers that looked like they
haven't moved in decades.  Where a friend of mine stores his boat, there is
a popup camper with a tree through the tongue.  It is about 3" in diameter
this year.

There are some that fit your price here. You can place a wanted ad for
fee also.

I went on rvtraderonline.com and found several trailers that fit your
description. You'd have to travel some to get them but a couple of
them seemed pretty good. I;d also suggest looking on ebay.

You just have to keep your eyes peeled...spread the word to friends and
family and have them keep an eye out.  I bought a 1983 Prowler 18' travel
trailer about 4 years ago....paid $1700 for it.  Not counting the new
gas/electric fridge, I've probably put another $500 in repairs in it (a good
chunk of that was new tires).  Not counting a boatload of hours rebuilding
the front end last summer after some rot problems.  (see
http://www.megley.com/photos/camperrepair for what that project took).

I've kept my eyes open since I bought ours, just to see what's out there in
the similar size and age range...and I've seen very few.  I've thought about
trying to find one to replace ours after the rot problems, but just haven't
seen much.  Like you said, too expensive, or too big...or in my case, too
new.  I want an older one with lots of windows you can open up...not a
toaster oven with little windows.  I like to camp at the beach in the
summer...with no electricity.  So lots of air is important.  Since the very
early 90's, most all travel trailers have a few small windows that barely
open up...

Just be very careful what you get...look closely for signs of rot and water
damage.  Make sure appliances work (or bargain on the price accordingly).
Don't take their word for it, test them.  Everything on ours supposedly
worked when last used...but the hot water heater ended up barely working and
then going bad soon after.  If you're traveling very far, make sure the
tires are decent (or plan to replace them).

If you're not careful, you can throw away $1000 (or more!) on a piece of
rotten junk...  Where I live, around $2000 is the going price for something
decent (and farily old) in the 18' range.

Good luck in your hunt, you'll find something eventually...it just takes
time I'm afraid...
