Hi guys ...it's me again the newbie...Have a '92 wiinabego 27ft....we
are trying find a way to tow our 2006 GMC envoy....any ideas on the
best way....it is not a 4X4..Has rear wheel drive...After looking at
the prices on the tow dollies i am wondering if it wouldn't be better
to just buy a cluncker with a stick shift to tow?....any suggestions?

Your 92, 27 ft. winner does not have the a.s to tow an envoy .... and unless
you invest in a serious braking system.... you won't be able to stop IF you
get that moose going.

You have it backwards; the sales guy said it was OK to tow the '92 Winnie
with the GMC Envoy.

Well, if the sales guy said it, then it must be true.

I don't believe you can flat tow a 2wd envoy.  And it's too big for a dolly,
and it depends on what engine and rear axle ratio the FIFTEEN YEAR OLD
Winnebago has in it whether you can tow Anything.

Hi,
The Envoy is heavy.  What is the towing capacity of the Winnebago?   If
it's under 5,000 lbs. you can't tow the Envoy.  The base curb weight of
a two wheel Envoy is 4400 lbs. before any options or anything you put in
it like fuel.  If you use a dolly you have to add the weight of the
dolly to the weight of the Envoy, probably put you over 5000 lbs.  It is
not wise or safe to tow anything over the towing capacity of the tow
vehicle.

If you are going to buy a vehicle to tow you need to keep in mind a few
things.  A small light car capable of being towed 4 wheels down is the
best bet. You have to stay under the towing capacity of the Winnebago.
If you don't want to use a dolly then you have to tow 4 wheels down.  If
you want to pull 4 wheel down. You need to buy a tow bar, the tow bar
has to be able to handle the weight of the towed vehicle.  You need to
buy and install a base plate on the towed vehicle that the tow bar
attaches to.  You need to get or should get a braking system for the
towed vehicle. You need to get brake and turn signals for the towed
vehicle that operate with the Winnebago's, or get it wired.  For those
three items you are looking at between $900 and $1500 if you do it
yourself.  If you use a dolly you have to make sure it's weight and the
weight of the towed vehicle is under the towing capacity of the
Winnebago.

There are ways to make "almost" any vehicle capable of being towed 4
wheels down by adding transmission pumps or drive line disconnects.
However if the vehicle is to heavy for the Winnebago then these are not
going to help.

Hope this helps some.  Take care and Happy Campin...

Nonny,

You can't pull that sucker with a little Winnabago.  It is too
heavy.  The Envoy weighs AT LEAST 4400 lb, probably more.  Be
sure to check the specs on your RV to be sure it can pull more
than 3500 lb.  Most likely, the rear of your RV chassis is not
strong enough to pull that weight.  Think about a much smaller
vehicle that weighs what you can tow within your specs.

And, don't buy a "clunker" just because it has a stick shift.
Get something that is towable 4 wheels down without problems.
Good luck on what you do get.  There will be lots of advice here.
