As some of you know we have been looking for a camper. After a great amount
of research, we decided on a 5th wheel. We have been to 3 major RV shows
over the past month, the latest being the largest in the northeast at the
Eastern States Expo fairgrounds this past weekend.
We were really impressed with how much is loaded into a Palomino. I
understand the company has been around since the 60's. Has anyone here ever
owned one, and can you tell me the pros and cons of this manufacturer?
Thanks

I have a Palomino slide in truck camper. Been a good camper. Cabinet doors
are cheapies, but that is only problem we have had. Went to Alaska last
year with it, and zero problems.

Excellent, Bill.. Did you buy it new or used?

I know they made pop up campers. I didn't know they were into hard-sided
campers.
You mention "how much is loaded" into the fifth wheel. Can the axles,
frame, tires and wheels hold everything they load in? Please look at
weights and construction while you are enjoying the amenities, floor
plans and decorations.
Also make sure you have enough truck before you buy *any* fifth wheel.
Have fun.

Thanks Janet.
That is why we are looking at this camper. We have a GWV of 10,200 and in
that range this Thoroughbred by Palomino is beating the competition with
it's features.
Hubby is a mechanic, and designer. Believe me, he is tearing into them as
we look at them.

Are you saying the gross weight of both vehicles is 10,200, or just the
trailer? If that trailer is grossing at or above 10,200, be sure the frame
is I-Beam construction and not box, or half box. That kind of weight is
going to put some stress on the frame. I've always used 10,000 as the line
in the sand...don't know why I chose that number and have no data to back it
up. Anything below 10,000 and in my mind a box frame would be OK...but
marginally OK.
Next thing you need to do is weigh that camper to see how close the
manufactuirer is on his guesses. Then you have to add all your gear to the
weight. I took mine to the scales fully loaded, full water
tanks...food...blankets...boom box...tackle box...everything I needed for a
week long camping trip. I was surprised at how much weight I carry. My
10,800 pound vehicle now weighed in at 14,000 plus.
Make sure you have enough truck to pull ALL the weight...not just the
published GVW.

Great! Sounds like you found something worthwhile. I hope that whatever
you choose to purchase will bring you nothing but safe and happy travels.

Hi,
Palomino is the company name. The 5th wheels models are either Puma or
Thoroughbred I believe. They also make pop ups and truck campers. They
are pretty well known for their truck campers. Had a friend that used to
sell the truck campers, they were a good company back then and made
pretty good truck campers. Don't know about their 5th wheels though.
Unless there is another company that has a model named the Palomino 5th
wheel :)
Take care and Happy Campin...

No, Rich, you are right... it is a Thoroughbred by Palomino.

Palamino has been manufacturing pop-up campers for years. Their claim to
fame was a new canvas material which they claimed would not mildew. I've
not been aware that they were building anything larger, and their
reputation doesn't exist among most TT and Fifth wheel people. When did
they start building fifth wheels?
