Dometic Recall

All,

Just got off the phone with a Dometic customer service guy and
registered my fridge for the recall.  I was told that the fix involved
replacing the "boiler tube" and that they were allowing 20 - 25 mins
for this fix.  Parts will be available for repair centers on April
16th.

Has anyone else talked with Dometic on this?

I have also talked with a repair facility that is going to do the work
on my fridge and they told me that Norcold had a similiar, if not the
same, recall about a year ago.  I guess Dometic is catching up.  He
mentioned that the issue with the leak mostly happens when the cooling
unit develops a blockage. With the bockage in place the cooling unit
begins to heat and this is when the tube breaks causing the fire if
running on gas.  Now HE mentioned the sheild and some sort of
component that will measure the temperature on the cooling unit.  When
the component senses that the cooling unit is too hot, don't know what
the definition of to hot is, it will then shut down the gas to the
fridge.  Has anyone heard any of this?

I guess I'm hearing two stories and was looking to find out what
others have heard.

I spoke with my dealer the day we received the recall notice, about two
weeks ago.  He pretty much relayed the first part of your post saying they
were going to allow him $40 to install the fix.  He said it would cost him
about twice that by the time he did the followup reporting with Dometic.
Also said it needed to be fixed buy not to worry too much about the trailer
bursting into flames - the line of fridges covered by the recall were, in
his experience, very reliable.  He had only seen one similar issue a year or
so ago and they reported it.  Seemed to think they were among dealers that
brought it to light.

No mention of blockages, shields, etc.

Thanks Ron.  Just wanted to confirm what I'm hearing so that I know
what to expect when the time comes for the fix.

I called Dometic two days after receiving the notice and checking my unit's
model and s/n on their web site. Apparently not all of the phone reps are up
to speed on the recall! She acted like I was from Mars asking what local
dealers would be "authorized service centers" to repair this recall! Turns
out the one I want to use is supposedly going to be authorized. Will be
right on it when the part is supposedly available to git 'er done and git
campin'! Ahhhh, SPRING!!!
