WHAT EXACTLY IS A TROLL? (An Insightful Analysis)

**The term "troll" is often used by some to describe a poster they
don't agree with or don't seem to like (even thought they don't even
know them).  Many times it seems to be overused or misused to describe
a person.  Let's explore exactly what a "troll" really is.  (Of
course, in folklore they were creatures that lived under a bridge but
the Usent version seems to have taken on another dimension.)

***A "troll" is basically a person who comes to a group, writes a post
of substance that is intelligently and logically presented and that
deals with a subject that might require effort and thought in order to
properly process.

***This immediately triggers a very nervous condition within the
elementary minds of many of the group's regulars as their brains are
asked to actually respond to logic for the first time in ages.  There
is a whirlwind of neural activity as synapses snap and pop from one
side of their cranial area to the other.  A tumultuous period of
disorientation follows and dizzy spells of varying degree envelop the
hapless creatures as they try to deal with something now foreign to
their neanderthal psyches.

***Thoughts like "OMG, I have to think," "Isn't there a rule that no
one can post anything that requires the use of brain waves or personal
effort?"  "Why an I being asked to think?" "Do I have to arrive at a
rational and intelligent decision on this idea?" race through their
troubled minds.

***As this confusion reigns supreme and the unanswered questions
heavily burden the simpleton minds of some of the old-timers in the
group, the tortured creatures now band together, as their cave
dwelling ancestors once did, and begin to utter the only words of
response to these new ideas that they know.  In true misguided
behavioral fashion coupled with the fear of the unknown and their
"deer in the headlights" mentality, they lift their gnarled fingers,
point toward the post and, in a guttural, near-unintelligible and
almost animalistic tone, scream "HE'S A TROLL!."

***This seems to the only way their near-empty minds can process
something so far above their intelligence and inbreeding since
advanced problem-solving techniques using logic and intelligence have
yet to be introduced into their primitive culture.

***Now that they feel they have responded to this new thought or idea
in the only manner their cretin minds can muster, they gather around
the ancient campfire, drooling and belching, rubbing their bright red
baboon butts together and munching on blackened bananas before heading
back to their cave, single file, their knuckles leaving small furrows
in the soil as their arms scrape the ground.

***Once back in the womb-like sanctity of their primitive, waterless
RV park, inside a huge cave in the side of a mountain, they lick the
day's fleas off of one another while employing a rudimentary form of
congratulatory behavior in having met and "dealt with" yet another
"threat" to their retarded and backward society.

******The intent of this new poster was never to incite, aggravate or
disturb the "old-timers" and he did not do this.  What disturbed and
agitated them was not the messenger, but the message and the
"disturbance" came in the eye and ear of the beholders, not the
poster.  In other words, their insecurities and their lack of embrace
to new concepts and ideas created some if not all of the turmoil they
felt.  Their unrest, therefore, was basically their problem not the
alleged "troll's" problem since they manufactured said unrest from
within.

***It proves the old maxim that NO ONE can MAKE US feel or do anything
if we are truly proactive and have control of ourselves.  To express a
negative reaction (i.e. anger and denigration) to a new poster and
call said new poster a "troll" simply shows a lack of self-control and
self-guidance in the reader, NOT THE TROLL.  Simply putting blame
where blame should lie.

Some trolls do benefit the group. They can get some good discussions going
that otherwise would not have come about. I think people to try to limit
discussion or force others to fit their world view are more detrimental than
a troll.

That's all well and good.  But, it doesn't take an Einstein to figure out
that alt.politics or alt.kill.bush would be a better place to spew than
alt.rv.  What makes you think that those who come here for rv information
are up to hearing the political and social rantings of misinformed or
uninformed idiots who, for the most part don't know the difference between
lose and loose?

There are some who come to usenet for a particular topic to discuss.
However, there are scores of people who do enjoy talking about most
anything among others with a common interest (rv'ing in this case).

In otherwords, say you went to a pre or post nascar race party.
Everyone there is a nascar fan.  Do you think everyone there will ONLY
talk about nascar and nothing else?  Should they have such restriction?

Yes, there are those lost annoying lonely souls who must find an audience to
vent their spleen on a regular basis.  For those who choose to sit around
the campfire and chew the fat, it's a whole movement.  And it's a free
world.  Everyone is entitled to talk about whatever they want.  Whenever
they want.  Wherever they want to.  It's all a matter of timing as to
whether or not you come across as a sensible person, raving lunatic or a
boor.

If multiple people are enjoying discussing a particular topic in a
friendly manner then theres no problem IMHO.  Why people get so bent out
of shape on topic matter baffles me.  People are enjoying the forum and
the people in it.  Thats a good thing!

A better definition is someone who posts something you don't like or
agree with.  That seems to be the trend anyways on who calls who a troll.

Miles, do you realize how absolutely juvenile and immature that
response sounds?  So your Mommy and Daddy taught little Miles that if
wittle Miles doesn't like something or someone says something he
doesn't agree with, he should call that person a name.  Does wittle
Miles also stick out his wittle tongue, put his wittle thumbs in his
ears and wiggle his wittle fingers at people who say things he doesn't
agree with?  Gad, what are you Miles?  11?  12?  13?  What a child
masquerading as a man!  Geesh.

I didn't say that was a proper response.  I said that is what occurs on
usenet.  Your reply above shows my point exactly.  You didn't like what
I said and replied rather predictably.

Yes, just like a crybaby imbecile! But, you will find that the RVers
here are all like that. They are a bunch of ignorant, crybaby bullies.
They are attracted to RVs because they get a sense of power from them.
What they lack in brain and gonad size they try to make up for in the
size of their vehicle. Then they use the vehicle to bully and make death
threats. These RVers are really a sick sad bunch of losers.

I like my RV trailer because I love to travel, dislike hotels, like to
cook my own gourmet meals and I travel to remote areas where hotels
don't exist.

POINT OF ORDER, MILES, I DID NOT, REPEAT, DID NOT CALL YOU A "TROLL."
I WAS MUCH MORE ACCURATE IN MY DESCRIPTION THAN WITH THE INCREDIBLY
NEBULOUS TERM "TROLL."

SO THEREFORE, THE RESPONSE WAS NOT "RATHER PREDICTABLY" AS YOU SATED.
A CLOSE ASSUMPTION, MILES, BUT SLIGHTLY "OFFLINE."  KEEP TRYING MY
SON...SOMEDAY YOU MAY EVEN BE ABLE TO MATCH THER DEPTH OF SARCASTIC
WIT AS EMITTED FORTH BY YOURS TRULY.

Your response was exactly what I was referring to.  As was your follow
up.  Exactly my point to the tee.

But Kilometers, how could my response fit your previous point to a tee
when your previous point had a dull end and therefore was not a real
point.  Just a point of order here.

Ahhhh, Steve jumps right in there with empty, silly, illiterate
response #2.  So far I'm 2 for 2 is my description of those who call
others a troll.  Just think how illuminating a response like "A troll
is anyone who takes 100 lines to describe themselves" really is.  It
says nothing of substance, makes no sense and leaves anyone with an IQ
higher than roadkill wondering, "what the hell was that sentence he
responded supposed to mean and how was it any type of illuminating
commentary on the OP?"  And to further prove Steve's "dumbness," the
actual OP was not denigrating to trolls so therefore Steve basically
agreed with the post with his little snippet of a rersponse.

Steve, Alan's waiting for you back at the cave for some
"interpersonal" activity.  LOL

And yet you not only responded to him/she/it, but quoted the whole
message for a one line response. Makes one wonder, or is that
wander? :)

Steve - Support our troops, bring them home now.

Governments, like diapers, must be changed often and for the same
reasons.

Thank you, Alan.  I'm happy to be a troll as per the description above
and your simplistic 5 word response proved my point exactly in regards
to the description of those who call others trolls---dumb, uneducated,
banal, non-creative and generally stupid.  What are you?  12?  13? 14?

I am a blatant homosexual and madly in love with you. I want to have
unprotected sex with you 24/7. Please respond again in any way to let me
know you really want it.And yes, I'm under the age of 18.

Boy of boy! That's one of the funniest and truest posts I've ever read.
Keep up the good work. I have one little suggestion, however, that would
make your diatribe more complete and accurate:  Right after this part---

> ***As this confusion reigns supreme and the unanswered questions
> heavily burden the simpleton minds of some of the old-timers in the
[quoted text clipped - 5 lines]
> point toward the post and, in a guttural, near-unintelligible and
> almost animalistic tone, scream "HE'S A TROLL!."

include the following:

*** Then, of course, comes the pea-brained chorus of, "kill file the
troll!" After that comes the self-congratulatory back-patting for taking
such an "original" course of action. Yes, sir, run back into the old
cave and stick your head into the nearest small crack in the wall so you
can remain blissfully deaf, dumb and blind. That's the way your
inadequately developed brains like it best. No input. Nothing to
process. Nothing to fear. No need ever to consider a new idea. Attaboy!
