While I enjoy long-term road trips in an RV, I still often need to
order something online via my laptop. Have any of you found any
solutions to making online purchases and receiving them locally where
you are. Of course this is easy if you are in an area where you have
friends with physical addresses.
Thanks

The closest I can think of to a universal solution are the major chain truck stops.
Petro, Flying J, etc. They're used to receiving packages for truckers.  All the major
chains have web sites that show their locations along with phone numbers.  You have
to figure out where you're going to be, locate the appropriate truck stop, and phone
ahead.

The only other solution I can think of involves using those personal shipping stores
like what used to be known as "mailboxes etc.".  Again, you'd have to figure out
where you're going to be on a certain date, then call ahead and make arrangements.

When I was driving a semi over the road, I used the truck stop solution occasionally.
But since I pass by home every month or two, I had most of them delivered to a
business owned by a friend.

Actually there is a far simpler solution that I have used in the
past. SImply have it sent "General Deleivery" by US Mail to a post
office that you will be around and you can go in and pick up mail
shipment with proper ID A example of address is below

Your Name
General Delivery
Town. State, zip.

Do this and the Post Office will place it in a will call hold that you
can pickup in person or even have it sent to another postoffice  if
you want too (get postmaster at new PO to request package)

I used general delivers once for serval months when I could not even
get a PO Box for a while. It works fine other than you have to get
mail at window.

The problem with that suggestion is that the OP asked how to have online
orders sent to him. The vast majority of Internet orders are sent via a
commercial carrier (UPS, Fed Ex, etc.).  Those services don't ship to
General Delivery.

I ordered a part up in Gunnison, Co. and had it delivered to the local UPS
place in town.  Did just fine.

I have had trouble getting items shipped to an address other than the
billing address shown by my credit card company.  I am sure there is a
dollar purchase limit before they refuse to ship to other addresses, but
have got in the habit of calling the credit card company and changing my
billing address to wherever I am at the time and then change it back after
the item has been shipped.  As far as an on the road address, we use the RV
park where we are or will be when we expect the item to arrive.

That is *especially true if you you
purchased the item on ebay.  The seller has
no recourse against a fraudulent buyer if
seller ships to other than CC addy.

Good communication with the seller will
probably alleviate the problem.

I had a $1500 laptop sent to my RV park in AZ and billed to my mailing
address in MN.  No problem whatever.

I wonder why that is?  I've never even been questioned about shipping to a different
address.  That my billing address is a PO box and my delivery address is almost
always a commercial address might have something to do with it.  I'm thinking back,
probably about $1000 is the most I've spent directly with an e-store's order page
(not talking on the phone or via email with someone).

I have stuff shipped to the billing address on our credit card, then
have our mailing service forward it along with the rest of our mail to
wherever we are.

I've ordered quite a few things online and had it delivered to an RV
park in AZ while my billing address is in MN.  Only one company has
called to verify my billing address phone number.

If you know the RV park where you will be staying, ask them if they will
accept your package. We had our medicines shipped by mail all during our
9 years of full timing and during our trips after that. DH has insulin
shipped and we've never had a problem as long as we asked first. The RV
park would even refrigerate the package for us. We've had things shipped
as much as 5 days before we expected to arrive.

Of course, one should make a reservation with the RV park first <g>

I once had a problem with the company not wanting to ship to an address
other than the billing address. It was not the shipper but the bank that
issues the credit card who objected. I called the bank and asked them to
allow the purchase to go through and they did.

I have also had things sent to General Delivery at the US Post office
but I first had to make sure they were shipping via postal service and
not UPS or Fed Ex.

I think it is clear..  *communication* is the
key..

We are normally dealing with good honest
folks who want a happy ending on both sides.
We just need to make sure all the bases are
covered.

Pretty easy actually...

If you are going to ship to a UPS Store (Formerly Mail Boxes Etc),
check with them first to see if that particular franchise location
will accept delivery -- Some of them won't except for their mailbox
customers.

Also check with RV park to see if they will accept -- Some don't want
the responsibility.

Contemplating a purchase (that I subsequently didn't make), I checked
with UPS in Silverton CO and found they would deliver to my numbered
campsite in the NFS CG near there!

I've had things shipped to a different than billing address before. Last
winter I had some plastic worms shipped to Florida, the vendor shipped
to New York then shipped me a new order in Florida. I've found most who
do this ask for the number on the back of the card. That way, someone
who has stolen your card number can't get stuff shipped to a different
address.
