hey all...

Time to hook up the 5th wheel and head out on our first RV trip to BC,
specifically the Banff, Lake Louise area.

Anyone had some good campground/resort experiences in the Radium Springs
or Fairmont Hot Springs area?  According to Trailer Life and Woodalls,
some nice campground/golfing resorts are in the area.

thanks...Ken

Just to set the record straight, the last time I looked at a map, Banff and
Lake Louise were still in Alberta, & I haven't heard they have moved to BC.
You may know something different.  Maybe the premier of Alberta has redrawn
the line between British Columbia & Alberta???

We stayed here www.radiumvalleyvacationresort.com    many years ago & were
happy witht the decision.  We have not been in this area for some time now
so can't update you on this.

It is affiliated with the Coast to Coast Resorts network so if a member fees
would be $8.00 per night.

Thank you for that piece of geographical trivia.  I should have worded
my query with a little more care. However, if I have perused my atlas
correctly, my principal area of interest for lodging in the Radium Hot
Springs and/or Fairmont Hot Springs seems to lie within the BC boundries.

The Radium Valley Resort you mentioned seems to just rent RVs as well as
other types of conventional resort lodging.  Thanks for mentioning it,
however.

I could be wrong, but didn't Coast to Coast Resorts go belly up a few
years ago because of mismanagement and poor public relations?

Coast to Coast is very much alive.  We use it extensively on our trip south
in the fall & on the trip home in the spring.  We are going across to the
eastern seaboard this summer & will be using some of the resorts along the
way.  Travelling Canada & US back and forth across the borders.  Especially
the ones that fall  within our route across.

We generally avoid Banff & Lake Louise like the plague so I can't be a
whole lot of help.  When we do stay at Banff we either stay outside
the park at Canmore (just barely outside the park gates to the east)
or at Castle Mountain which is about 30 miles west of Banff townsite.
Castle Mtn is unserviced and generally has openings even in the height
of the tourist frenzy.

We now spend most of our BC time in the Shuswap Valley (Sicamous &
area) but we have spent a lot of quality time in the Kootenay Valley
as well.  We stayed in Radium National Park once - can't remember
anything bad about that - saw plenty of bighorn sheep there.

If you want some recommendations further west - ie in the Shuswaps -
then I'd be happy to help.

Thanks Bob. I have given some consideration to Canmore, but it just adds
more miles to the already long drive from California.  Like you, I try
to avoid the heavily traveled tourist areas. I like the idea of places
like Fairmont Hot Springs that also offer golfing, biking, etc. even if
means paying a higher price.

My last extended trip to BC was in 1986 when the World's Fair was going on.

thanks...Ken

And you should know that I am generally prejudiced against our
national parks because - beautiful, grandiose and scenic though they
may be - they are governed by our federal gummit who delegates the
authority to operate the parks to a band of thugs which my wife and I
refer to as the park nazis.  If you insist on staying in Banff Park
then I would still recommend that you consider Castle Mountain.   You
are going to go right by it on the way from Radium to Banff anyway -
it won't add any distance to take a look at it.  You can stay at
Castle Mtn and drive into Banff if you really want to visit Tokyo on
the Bow River.

To expand on what R.J. has written I just don't like being gouged to stay at
a National Park campground.  Not only do you have to pay for the right to
stay at the camp(which I can justify) but when staying there you also have
to pay for a park pass.  If you want to have a fire, pay for that.  Next
thing you know they will be charging to use a the unserviced washrooms and
they do charge for using the dump station.  A reasonable amount is okay but
$7.90 is excessive I say.  So for a family to stay at Castle Mountain
Campsite would cost in the neighbourhood of  $54.40 to camp, stay in the
park one night, build a fire & dump their rig.  Knowing the gov't they
probably charge GST on all of that.  Just a bit excessive in my books.  Here
is the website to Banff National Park
http://www.pc.gc.ca/pn-np/ab/banff/visit/tarifs-fees_e.asp?park=1 .
