We have a travel trailer that we just bought.  We are new to this.
Question is this.  If you use your trailer about once a month for a
weekend and keep it in storage the rest of the time, do you empty the
black tank every time you use it?  There are just two of us.

Yes. Always. I don't think I would want that stuff fermenting in the
tank for a month, do you?

I thought so but I promised my husband I would ask.

Thank you for your quick response.

I hope you checked back for other responses. When you are going to empty
that tank after just a weekend of 2 people, fill it to at least 2/3 full
before emptying. Empty the black tank before emptying the gray tank,
that way the gray water will rinse  out your sewer hose.

If you don't have a built-in tank rinser, you might consider sticking a
water hose into the commode to rinse it. Don't use your drinking water
hose!!

The solids in your black tank will not have enough time to decompose in
just a weekend. Dumping a tank with very little liquid will allow the
solids to pile up on the tank bottom. That is something you do not want
to happen. Just hold the pedal down and let the water level in the tank
come up before you dump it.

What a racial slur post!  You shouldn't be equating rotting human bodily
waste with blacks?

The correct word to use is brown water for flushed human waste, gray
water for sink water.

Use the term 'holding tank' for the container that holds one or both of
the above, please.

There's no such thing as a "black tank."

Hmmmm. Looks like I was wrong. You RVers use different terminology that
I do. But, I still don't care for the term "black tank."  Holding tank
is much more politically correct.

Anyway, here's a link that says it's NOT a good idea to empty an almost
empty holding tank.

I hate to swim against the tide ('specially when it's black water  -) ),
but...

I've owned two class B's and now have a 19' '06 Tiger CX.  They've
mostly been used for solo day trips and a few 1-3 nighters, rarely in a
CG.
So even the small tanks fill up slowly.

I usually dump every three to six weeks, with no odor problems even in
summer, unless I let the sink or shower trap dry out.  I add plenty of
water to the black tank just before I drive the ~10 miles to the NFS CG
where I dump ( $5).  I follow the dump with a few-gallon 'rinse' before
dumping grey water.

I add a few gallons of water and most of a pack of Thetford Camp-a-Chem
dry powder to the black tank (the rest goes in the grey tank; just a
habit).  I tend to be conservative with water use.

I've gone as much a two months after minor surgery, using the RV, but
not dumping; no stink.   But as always, YMMV....

I agree with you Jim.  Unless there is a problem with the system not dumping
the tank after every weekend of use shouldn't be a problem.  As long as the
toilet seal stays sealed the only place odor can go is up the vent pipe and
it is designed to vent that way.

Not entirely true at all.  Most chemicals do not last months especially
in the heat of summer.  Are people that lazy they can't dump?  If there
isnt a dump station where I am camped I'll stop at one on the way home.

A point not yet made is to keep that tank wet at all times.
Never let the black water tank or the gray water tank dry out.
That is asking for trouble with the valves and with a dry crud
buildup that can block the valve so it won't dump when you
expect it to.

Whenever you dump, you should add a couple of gallons of water
back to the tank along with a dose of the chemicals you use.
That will keep it wet and whatever remains in the tank will
digest and liquefy while it sits.  This is good.

I dump and then put a few gallons of water into the black tank.  I
haven't been so good at that with the grey.  I did have to replace the
black valve this year.  Trailer is only 3 years old.

Your politically correct comment had absolutely nothing to do with a
boss.  It referred to black tank.  Black tanks are black water tanks.
Black people have over the years had a hell of a time deciding what
they want us 'honkies' to call them.  I use words I choose, not
because some rabble rousing racially prejudiced agitator says it is
ok.

Holding tank doesn't specify whether its toilet waste or sink and shower
waste.

Thats true if you're camping trip isn't over yet.  But a dump and flush
and then add some fresh water when storing is always a good thing.

Correct me if I'm wrong but when you hook up to empty your holding tanks
they both go into the same sewer don't they? So what's the real use of
having two different holding tanks? Why not dump all the waste water
into the same tank?

Black clearly refers to African Americans. Naming a sewage tank after
them is a clear racial slur in my humble opinion. Wouldn't "sewage
holding tank" be more descriptive and less of a racial slur? The water
in the sewage holding tank is clearly not black. It's clearly no more
black than it's white. So, why not call it a "white tank?" See what I
mean?

I think I'm going to start calling the tank I sh.t in, Harry Harris.
That is a most appropriate name for something that is always full of sh.t.

Oh, be nice for once. You have to admit I have a good point about this
terminology.

Hey Frank. I have a personal question if you don't mind. I 've developed
this theory about handedness in people irrespective of which hand they
write or eat with. What hand do you wipe your a.s with?

Pretty lame an attempt at humor there...

Now, think about it for a minute. Parents will teach their children to
write with their right hand or eat with their right hand. This is
because lefties have more difficulties in a righty world. This leads to
some people seeming to be right-handed but they may just be re-trained
lefties.

Now, when it comes to wiping one's butt no parent that I know of ever
taught his kid to use his right hand to wipe his butt. So my theory is
you can tell if you're a natural righty or lefty by which hand you use
to wipe your a.s. Sound logical?

So, Crayola has in the box not the black crayon, but the african
american crayon.

In space, we now have an african american hole.

My cat is african american.

What color is your truck? It's african american.

When I was a kid, the cops hit me with an african american jack.

People I despise are african american listed, and girls I like I keep
in my little african american book.

And I don't know what your water looks like, but mine is clearly much
more black than white, how this is twisted to refer to people is
insane. Dopes like you ruin a language, and malign those who use an
otherwise useful and descriptive word as racist.
