Make your own portable fridge?

Hi
I am planning a trip to the Baha next winter with my wife and
newborn.  We're on a very tight budget.  We have a suitable van
(Safari) that we can all sleep in comfortably, and can set up an
eating area made of tarps and portable tables.   We can easily handle
cooking, washing outside as we are seasoned campers.

I consider a fridge to be a absolute must have for an extended trip
such as this my options are:

Commercially made three way fridge, I would run this on propane
outside the van once we set up camp (expensive).
Electric compressor fridge running off an inverter, needs solar or
wind generator to re-charge the batteries (expensive)

OR THIS  (Very cheap)

Do you think it is feasible to get a hold of a used rv fridge, remove
it from it's camper/pop top and use it as a portable fridge operating
outside?   I would have to build some sort of a box with a similar
intake/exhaust vent that you would normally see as a permanant install
in an rv.  Plus attach an approved hose and regulator to a propane
tank.   Is this madness or has anyone done it successfully?

Thanks for any input

A small 120v apartment fridge will easily run off an inexpensive
inverter.  If you can't afford one of each, better stay home.

An RV fridge requires a 12 volt power source (for the electronic
controls) in addition to propane.

Not necessarily. Depends on the model.

Mine (Dometic RM2310) doesn't. But it doesn't have electronic controls,
either.

If you are on a real strict budget, you might think of building a cooler out
of 2" styrofoam.
We had one at our hunting camp and it would keep ice from one week to the
next, during the summer.
Put a small hole in the bottom to drain any water from the melted ice.

That is an excellent idea, word has it that ice can be had for a few $
$ every day at the beach we are heading too.  Hmmmmm that's a project
I can handle no problem

You can buy styrofoam coolers for $1- at a dollar store.

Slightly thicker ones for $3-$4 at a supermart.

They fit inside each other, so double up.

Use 2 for a small cooler, or even 4 for 2 coolers.

Side comment.  Get a supply of  Pedialyte (or similar) which is critical to
rehydrate a child/baby when things are not great.

We keep a supply on hand and have for years.  Not needed often but the times
that it was were critical.

Since you are making the cooler, it doesn't have to be "X" inches by "X"
inches.
If you have some odd shaped area you want to use, you can cut the styrofoam
any size you want.
Just make sure you overlap the corners so you have a full 2" thick all
around.
You need a 2" thick lid, also.
Good luck.

If you do, consider painting the inside with some kind of sealant to
prevent smells from penetrating the styrofoam. It may also lend some
degree of strength to the walls.
