The wife and I are seriously considering full-timing and working from the
road. We are trying to decide how best to accomodate a working lifestyle and
still have room for our 3 small children. We would like to be able to bring
another adult, but seating in the tow vehicle becomes an issue.

We decided that at minimum we would need a 2 bedroom, 30ft TT. With bunks in
the 2nd bedroom we could accomodate the kids, still have "private" sleeping
quarters for ourselves, and not have to turn over the dinnette (office)
whenever someone wants to sleep. I would prefer to tow with a pickup truck
that has a shell on the back for gear storage, but that would limit the
seating. I suppose a Chevy Suburban or similar would have ample seating and
still be able to handle to load of a 30 footer.

Alternately, I really like the idea of a 5th wheel for stability and ease of
handling. The problem is the seating in the TV. Have any of you driven with
a person in the trailer? The wife and I fantasize that sitting alone in the
5th wheel while driving would be the most concentrated work (laptop) time
that
we will be able to get. But it's not worth risking life and limb. Is it any
more dangerous that riding in a Greyhound bus with no seatbelt?

Do any of you have 1st hand experience traveling with 5-6 people and a
camper? I would appreciate your insight.

Thanks,
Aharon

Go for a classA.  This will prevent the dangerous and illegal placement of
the kids inside the trailer.  They don't put seat belts in trailers because
anybody  stupid enough to ride in a moving trailer is too stupid to use them
anyway.  Anybody dumb enough to put kids back there is criminally stupid.

Go with a classA with bunks and sofa-bed.

We used to live on a 38' sailboat, so a two br TT feels like a palace! And
once you've had to affect engine repairs at sea, you'll never consider
anything on land (short of arterial bleeding) to be an emergency.

Our reasons for wanting to full-time now are simple:
1) We have jobs that don't require our physical presence. So as long as we
can find/buy reliable internet connections, we should be able to keep the
family rolling.

2) Our kids are 1-4 years old and they travel really well. We rented a class
C for 10 days last Christmas and the 4 year old still talks about it. In
extended road trips in our SUV they are rather content with DVD, snacks and
occassional rest stops. We figure this is our last chance to do a year or so
on the road before, as you said, social services becomes an issue.

3) We may be moving overseas soon, and we want to experience (at least
photograph) as much of America as possible before we go.

So I don't doubt that we'd survive it happily. I'm just wondering (like so
many before me)what the best vehicle combination is for us. Most of the big
families that I've seen have a class A with/without a toad. This baffles me.
You seem to get a better simulation of separate rooms in any vehicle other
than a class A. And after our experience in a class C we decided that it is
not safe for the kids OR the parents to be moving around while driving. The
kids seem more comfortable buckled into the SUV than into the dining table
of the class C. And they are definitely more safe in the SUV.

We absolutely want a comfy, roomie car type vehicle for day trips. We
envision being parked for days/week in every location and exploring,
shopping, etc. in the car/truck. So either we take on the expense and
redundancy of MH and large toad, or get a big TV and trailer.

Just for clarification, I would never consider riding in a TT while moving.
I've seen them tipped over and it looks too easy to do. But somehow that
seems less likely with a 5th wheel. But if we have 6 people and a 5 seater
pickup, then 1 person is OBLIGATED to ride behind. And that seems a little
much. And I guess it totally precludes taking all 6 people site seeing. So
the 5th wheel is out. We are down to MH + toad or Suburban + TT.

I think the MH might be better if we had teenagers who insisted on moving
around and finding their own space while driving. That is simply not
practical with little kids. They need to be in car seats all the time. Thus,
I think we're settling in on the Suburban + TT combo. But again, I would
love to hear from personal experience. How has this worked out for your
family?

There is a really nice guy who used to post here who travels extensively
every summer with his wife (they're both schoolteachers) and their young
son. For several years they drove an extended Ford passenger van and
pulled a 28-30' travel trailer (I'm going on memory here). I believe
they now have a pickup truck and a fifth wheel.

If you want, I can put you in touch with him by e-mail and let you ask
his advice too.
