Hello to all
We are traveling in Alaska in a recently purchased used MH, 1994
Bounder 34J. The Onan generator has been giving us intermittent
problems. The generator specs are:
Model: 7NHMFA26106D
Serial: I933077094
Background info:
MH was stored for aproximately 18 months before our purchase. Don't
know if generator was run during this period.
Generator worked fine at start of trip (first 3 weeks) during which
time we often ran at least one air conditioner.
The generator has about 400 hours total, oil changed 80 hours ago, new
plugs, recent air filter, onan 4C treatment 80 hours ago.
The symptoms are as follows:
1. Generator will crank but not start. during this mode, it appears
that the throttle is held closed by system. If throttle is opened
manually, the generator will start and run, but only as long as
throttle is held open.
2. Generator will start and run (no load) for some few minutes, then
stop and revert to mode 1 above.
3. Generator will sometimes start and run with no problem (maybe 50%
of the time)
4. Earlier in the trip, when running both air conditioners, the
generator would sometimes surge repeatedly with the cyclic demand from
the compressors. We have not needed air conditioning recently, hence
generator has not been fully loaded. (This symptom may not be related,
and seemed to go away after some time.)
I have tools and DMM for troubleshooting.
Thanks for your help

Id pour some Fuel Injection Cleaner in your gas tank which will find its
way thru the Generator , and see if that improves things.  If not,  id
call Onan or a local Onan Repair Center.

1. Make sure there is no electrical load intermittent, ie a short.

2. Check for water in the gas, put in some dry gas.

3. Put in some gasoline stabilizer and fuel system cleaner.

4. Check mixture setting on carb. Does it run at low altitude and poorly at
high altitude?

5. Check for lose fittings on carb or fuel line. Check fuel line for kinks.

6. Is engine level and the float level?

7. Oil shut off?

8. Is fuel shut off completely open? Clog in fuel line?

9. Check for vapor lock? Can fuel line be heated by engine? Does
disconnecting the fuel line at the carb and reconnecting it make the problem
go away?

10. Check for lose fasteners, connections, etc.

Hope this is helpful.
