I see there are Truck Weigh Stations on the Interstates, but will they
allow you to weigh your RV (for a nominal sum of money) ?? Or, will
Gravel Yards oblige in weighing your vehicle ? Im curious to know what
it weighs . Thanks.

I bet the dump would do it for free. You know, you drive a truck onto
their scales, then you dump your garbage then you drive back through and
they weigh you again. They charge by the difference (tare).

I go to a farmers grain station near here that buy grain and sell
feed. They all have scales. THe one here can measure over 100K lbs and
is 80 feet long too.

The highway scales that are open do NOT want you in them, period, and
they do not accept money to weigh you. Typically you want what are
called "Public Scales" that do weigh for money. Almost all large truck
stops have them as part of their operations, as trucks who charge by
weight have to get certified numbers every trip.
In some places there are other choices. In Oregon, for example, the
roadside scales on secondary roads are normally closed, but they leave
the scales on, so you can cross them and read your own weight. Many of
us in the Pacific Northwest use that as a primary method.

The easiest in and out, and the safest, are still the scales that are
at most truck stops along the interstate system.

The rock quarry near you is nothing like the one near me then!! It's a
bitch to get in and worse to get out, and it's for sure not free
UNLESS you are hauling gravel.

I've had my van weighed at a furniture factory (the scale was right by
the big-truck entrance gate shack) and at a chip mill (where they grind
up logs into wood chips).
Both times all it took was a polite request. The folks practically fell
all over themselves to help me -- and both invited me to come back
anytime I needed to.

All of the advice you got was good, however I recommend you have each
wheel weighed, not just the axles. Many truck alignment shops have the
separate wheel scales as do some RV repair shops (not usually the one
attached to dealerships). If you can make it to the Escapees Escapade in
Indiana in September, sign up for the RVSEF people to weigh your rig.
They will weigh each wheel and use the information on weight and tires
that you provide in advance to give you a detailed picture of what's
needed to make your rig safe. It's worth the money.
It would be very worth-while for you join Escapees and go to the rally.
You will be able to take seminars in every aspect of RVing, including
many that you have asked us in these newsgroups. The seminars are not
commercially motivated and have helped thousands of RVers and future
full-timers with questions like yours.

REPLY: Ive considered it, but, I wonder just how much more info 'i need
to know/learn' about my RV and RVing in general since ive now done it
for 3 years. The only area left that i have some questions regarding,
is long term RVing..but im almost at the end of those questions. Dave.
