I've got a clean 1971 ford F100 long bed 360V8 that is fairly clean
and I have done a lot of work to it. Grandma (my mother) like to go
camping with the family but does not like sleeping in dirt and would
like a kitchen to cook in.

I'm thinking of buying an older (not too older) cab-over camper too be
Grandma's home when the family goes camping.  Maybe a small trailer.

Problems:
She must feel safe riding in it - I can't come close to over loading
the truck.

It can't look crappy. She can make new curtains and cushions, but she
will not go for a hill billy camper.

I could probably get away with out a black water system at first, but
should I?

Does anybody have a clue what I should be looking for, what I should
plan on doing to the truck? We will not be driving accross county.

Thanks   jimi

If she like Rving that much she will have to sport that on her own,
But I think I can still make this cool, at a fraction of the price of
what ever a Provost is. I can picture her fixing it up how she wants.
and maybe down the road I'll find her something better. Like a 1974
Dodge 440 Winabago haha

An F100 is too light for a slide in camper and you can't ride in a
trailer (unless it's a 5th wheel with communication with the truck).
Besides, even riding in the camper is not good, unless you don't care
for "Gramma".

Don't they make over head campers for little toyota trucks? And I
could put overload springs on it. And I'm hoping the newer ones are a
little lighter then the old ones for 3/4T camper specials.  No????

An F100 is not set up like the newer F150. Check out your suspension
against a newer truck with the F150 rating. Check the axles ratings.

No one would ride in the back, unless it was like on a back county
dirt road.

Don't they make slide in campers for little toyota's? I was thinking a
newer one - not the great big kind that hang out the end may  work AND
I could put 3/4T springs on  it. Grandma would be riding in the
front.

Do you think I would have better luck with a 5th wheel

I think you've got more problems than you know. On-board
truck campers have enough room for a small dog. No room for
multiple people.

With that truck, you can pull a popup or *maybe* an ULTRA
light TT. Ditch the truck camper, she ain't gonna like it.

Hopefully this isn't just a troll, but I fear....

What is a troll.

I don't need room the rest of the campers they do the tent thing.  And
mom is going shopping with me that's for sure. You don't think I could
tow a relatively new trailer 20' or smaller? We are not going great
distances. We live in the CA bay area and there are lots of places
along the coast with no great hills.

This truck was ordered with a low geared rearend. Which means it get
real bad gas mileage but it was ment to tow or pull something. I could
put 3/4t springs on it if I needed.

If you're askin', you probably aren't one. :D That's a good
thing...

Sure you could tow a 20'er with a 360 if the suspension will
take the tongue weight. I thought you were talking about a
truck camper that slid into the bed.  Those aren't for older
folks at all.

Travel trailers she could probably do if she doesn't require
a lot of privacy. There's not a whole lot of that in a TT. ;-)

My mom is 65 and in very good heath. I though a newer slid in the bed
camper that was lighter may work. I was thinking about a trailer too.
She need NO privacy. What ever I get there will be kids and people
bouncing in and out of it. It will be used for cooking / fridge.  I
just need some help on what direction to go. With a little info and
shoping around the right one will show itself.  Mom is picky. What she
wants, given the limitation of my truck it what she will get. Some
people misunderstood me and thought I was going to haul her in the
trailer. What I ment is when she ride shot gun, she has to feel safe/
stable.

I don't think i want to have something with black water. I could
always tell everyone it's broken HAHAHA

thanks jimi

Personally then, I'd probably get a 20+ish foot travel
trailer that fits the pulling capacity of your truck.

Yea I think I'm started to agree. It will be hard to find the right
slide in for my truck, while there are tons of trailers. And we really
need a full sized fridge and room for more than one person cooking.
And kids like to sleep with grandma. I guess I should get as big as I
can, given the truck I'll be using. I really did not want to have to
maintain a black water system, but I guess one gets use to it and it's
easy enough. Or I could lay the law down. the bathroom is for grandma.
I could have 20 people trying to use my system - jimi is not going to
play that hahaha

Got a ball hitch on the truck? Consider one of the ultra lights that have a
bathroom/kitchen/sofa that turns into a bed, and just put the tents and
stuff on the floor, so whenever you want to go, just hitch up and motor
away.... Works well with older/smaller trucks....
That would let others sleep in tents, and have the trailer with
bathroom/kitchen/fold down sleeping for one person.. heck, you don't have to
get a big trailer for everone to live in at the same time, and worry about
the weight.... Just having it for the one older person, with a bathroom and
kitchen, seems like it would be cool...

Did that for the grandkids, I slept in the trailer (didn't like the ground)
and they liked tents outside.... Bathroom and kitchen were cool to have
where anyone can get stuff (ps the bathroom actually just had one combined
tank, that held both black and grey), and when I wasn't sleeping, the bed
was a couch so we could all sit around and talk/eat....

As an example, see these tent trailers (not recommending these, just had pix
and descriptions, so thought it may give you some ideas)

What Steve wrote:  You are nutz to think a slide-in camper is the
answer.  A pop-up is a much safer and practical option.

Depending on her shape, you might want to think about a pull behind instead
of a slide in.  Slide ins can be rather high off the ground.  She won't be
getting any younger.

She runs 5 miles 3 times a week

Unless you find a light-weight very small truck camper with a canvass
top (pop up-style camper), an F100 won't carry a pickup camper. All of
the weight is in the bed without wheels to help.

What if I put over load springs on it?   But what the heck, I don't
have my heart set on a cab over camper. But I have to make this truck
do the job what ever it is.
