Just wondering if I-40 in Arkansas and Oklahoma is as bad as it was a
couple years ago? I know in both states it used to be like a washboard
for mile after mile in some areas. Planning on a trip out to AZ in a
couple months and am trying to decide on my route. I'd like to go
through Nashville and Memphis to visit friends, but if I-40 is still as
bad as it was I will take a more northern route. TIA

This time of year it would not be too bright to take a northern route. Can
you say cold, ice and snow? And you would have to use a lot of propane
keeping your RV warm. Propane is dangerous. It can and does blow up RVs,
homes, trailers, etc. Take a southern route.

We did a week ago and it was not that bad.  A few stretches were not
great but overall I would do it again.  Oklahoma city was about the worst.

We also used our propane on the road and did not blow up ... in fact
we did not see a single RV that had blown up!

They must have just towed them away.
If you listen to Harry, there are exploded RV's laying all over the side of
the roads.

The only rv that I'm sure was exploded was caused by a fellow refilling a
hot coleman camp stove  *inside*  the rv. (class C)  Loud thump (50yards
away), blown windows, dazed passengers; ambulance called, injuries unknown.
Vehicle was parked at Foote Dam , near Oscoda, Michigan.  Mid  '70s.

If OKC is the "only" bad part that's good sign. Thanks.

Isn't that strange. . . . :)

I-40 near downtown Oklahoma City is being replaced by a new route a little
south of the current I-40.  Because the new I-40 is under construction, not
much maintenance is being done on the elevated parts of the current I-40.

There is also a section of I-40 from the west side of Oklahoma City/Yukon to
near El Reno that is bad.

In a few hours I will be towing our 5er from Oklahoma City to Amarillo and
will have current info, but I didn't think it was bad last May and June when
we travelled out that way.

I guess not much has changed in OKC then. Hopefully I can get through in
a hurry. :)

I don't recall the road being bad after El Reno from my last trip a
couple years ago.

Just got home from a trip from Oklahoma City to Amarillo and back towing our
35' fiver.  We hit I-40 at the I-44 junction and went west.  The bad section
around Yukon and out to near El Reno wasn't really good, but was better than
in the past.  It looked like they had run a grinder over the right lane and
smoothed it out somewhat.

The other section that needs some attention was the east bound side for
10-15 miles starting a few miles east of Amarillo.  Some areas in both OK
and TX were excellent while others we just OK.  The only other section that
stands out was in OK.  It was new asphalt and they were still working on the
shoulder of the east bound lane.  Smooth as glass!  Would I drive it again,
you bet!

Thanks for the update on the road in OK. Seems I-40 has improved a bunch
from a couple years ago from Memphis to Amarillo. Now it looks like all
I'll have to worry about is Mother Nature and no snow in January. :)

I-40 in AR was real bad back in the 90s.  Since then most if not all has
been redone.  We made a trip across AR in the late 90s and from the OK line
to Little Rock it was 10 miles or so of construction, 1-2 miles of no
construction and then another 10 miles or so of construction.  Unfortunately
all the construction areas were single lane and it was impossible to get
around all the slow traffic in the short areas between construction zones.

Thanks for the info, I knew they had been working on the road in AR.
Glad to hear they've got most of it done.

The happiest people don't necessarily have the best of everything.......
they just make the most of everything that comes along their way.

We travelled I-40 the mid part of October  I am sure not much has changed.
This was our experience.  The highway from the Arkansas border to Oklahoma
City was not good.  In fact we commented & wondered if fuel tax dollars were
ever spent on this road.  This was the I-40 travelling in a westerly
direction.  The eastern portion I cannot speak of as we were not on it. When
we spoke with one person in OK city they commented that it was all spent on
putting the new dome on the capital building.   But when we got to OK city &
visited the Alfred P. Murrah Memorial Site we almost could have forgiven the
gov.  The site was worth the time to visit it.   Upon leaving OK city we
once again got on I-40 and found out that the highway was in much better
shape.
PS: I have a short blurb in my blog & the hwy.

Just last week (weekend of the 17th) we ran I40 from Hickory NC (exit 125)
to I30 in Little Rock.  then south on I30 to Dallas TX.

No problems with the roads.

Made the return tip via I20 to I85 (today) without incident out of concern
for possible wind and snow on I40 in the mountain pass at the NC/TN state
line.

Did notice that while Texas charged for internet access at the welcome
stations, Arkansas and Mississippi does not.  BTW Mississippi wifi is hot
24/7 even if the building is closed.  Arkansas may or may not have wifi but
they do have Ethernet RJ45 ports in the welcome station.  Mississippi also
has functional displays inside the welcome station with internet access
(some sites a blocked as not family friendly)

Class A high line BTW.
