I'm setting up my 1998 Wrangler as a toad. It's a manual transmission. Do I
need to do anything beyond putting the transfer case in neutral, I don't
have lockouts on the front hubs.... thanks

Recommended to remove driveshafts.

Can you elaborate? Aren't both of the driveshafts turning all the time
anyway in either 2 or 4 wheel drive?

I think it's recommended that after the transfer case is in neutral, the
5 speed should be in a forward speed. I tow my 98 with the shift lever
in 2nd gear.

Do you know why the transmission needs to be in a forward gear. I thought it
was disconnected when the x-fer case is in neutral.

Not sure. It may be in the owners manual that I've misplaced.

When we had our 99 with a manual transmission the owners manual
recommended first gear for the transmission and the x-fer case had to be
in neutral. I suspect that this kept the transmisson from free-wheeling
because of the lube in the x-fer case.

We now have an automatic 2004 Wrangler were we put the x-fer case in
neutral and leave the transmission in park when towing.

In that config, both front and rear axles will turn, front and rear diffs
also, front and rear driveshafts, and the output shafts in the xfer case.
IIRC the reason for placing the tranny in a gear is to immobilize the
internals. You might want to investigate the following - a set of locking
hubs on both front and rear wheels. Unlock them when towing and lock them in
when driving the Jeep. I have seen that set up on several toad Jeeps. I
can't comment on how good or bad it works but it makes sense....Good

I guess the reason to put the tranny in gear relates relates to the viscous
coupling that could happen causing the gears to turn but not fast enough for
splash lubrication to be effective. The lockouts are a good tip. Thanks to
all for responding.

The only source for the real answer is the owner's manual. If it's missing
contact Jeep for one or get printed instructions published by Jeep (not just
a ng guru, dealer or mechanic opinion/answer). My experience is with my 2000
Cherokee (XJ, 4.0L, AT, 4WD, no locking or lockout hubs). Owner's manual
says to put transfer case in neutral, transmission in Park, key in
off/unlocked position, no mileage limits and legal speed. The only warning
is to never tow it on two wheels regardless of TC position (even by tow
truck) or the TC will suffer damage. I can't see a mechanical reason for
this restriction but I have no interest in paying to repair needless damage.
The two ERS services I've used with the Jeep over seven years and an
Explorer (no TC neutral position) over 15 years have always sent a flatbed
instead of a tow truck. I have towed the XJ nearly 40K miles and driven it
70K miles with no problems (at least none that could be attributed to
towing) except that the tires and brakes wear out based on total miles
rather than odometer miles. Oh yes, one suggestion with closed vehicles - if
possible turn off outside airflow thru the HVAC or stay off dusty roads!
