Truck mirror advice

I am going to be towing a 5th wheel.  Need to buy mirrors for my Chev.
Silverado.

Those clip on extensions look interesting.  They clip / strap on to your
existing mirrors and additionally extend a fixed number of inches.  Has
anybody here used them and like to comment.  I realize that safety is an
issue, but, the prices are so variable ($30 to $350) that it is hard to
decide.

Advise appreciated.

Check out McKesh Mirrors from the Hensley Hitch people:

http://shop.hensleymfg.com/mckeshmirrors.html

They will cost you about $170 (with a convex mirror on each side) and are
great. They are great!  I used them for 4 1/2 years until I changed trucks
and the new truck had factory installed towing mirrors.  It takes about 1/2
hour to set up each mirror to fit your truck.  After that it is a 30 second
job to put them on or take them off and most of that is putting the window
down and back up.

If you are near central OK we might be able to work out a deal on my old
set, but I won't go through the hassle of trying to ship them.

I used a set of clip-on, extension mirrors when first towing with an S10.
Their performance was marginal compared to the type of add-on mirror I now use:

It was my experience with the clip-on mirrors that, on one of my mirrors,
enough stress was added to the factory mirror that, forever after, it vibrated
and rattled.

The pictured, strap-on mirrors are the type used by Trailer Life magazine when
required for their tests.  I find them to be superior to the clip-on type.

Without modification or other accommodation, I have used them for years
without ANY damage to the vehicle.  I recommend them highly.

Hensley Manufacturing markets (makes?) this type of mirror under the McKesh
brand:

In their website, they mention a "cheaper copy-cat".  I suspect that is what I
have.  I bought my set from Camping World around 1999.  I am hard-pressed to
see or imagine what would account for the $88 price difference between the two.

If the McKesh (Hensley) mirrors ARE domestically made, I'd pay the extra $88.

We have been using the Cipa towing mirrors when pulling our 33 ft 5th
wheel. They kind of slip over the existing mirror and work in
conjunction with them. Work just fine for us, they stay firmly on and
vision is good with them. Our tow vehicle is a 03 GMC Sierra 2500HD EC,
duramax long bed. Several of our friends use them too. Their website is
at this link but other sales outlets can be found on the internet.

That is the same mirror I use on my 2500HD when towing our 32' 5th wheel.
They fit snug and adjust right and stay set. Been using the set for years.

I have tried both these CIPA and McKesh and now have the Schefenacker TTT.

The CIPA I found vibrated too much to be of real use on the highway,
especially at night. This was on a '99 F250, I think the extra weight was
the issue, causing vibration.

I next got a set of the McKesh and loved them, great visibility, and once
set up and modified (I replaced the wing nuts; I drilled through and
attached a nut and bolt once I found the correct settings) they were easy to
install and set up. A hint if you do get these; twist the strap once before
hooking it to the bottom of the door, it will keep it from vibrating and
humming in the wind. My only concern was scratching the window after long
term use and possibly permanently damaging the rubber weather seal on the
outside of the window.

I now have the Schefenacker TTT and will unhesitatingly recommend them in
spite of the price. The extra convenience of having power operated mirrors
and ease of setup...

I sold the original mirrors on eBay and recouped $75:00 of my investment.

I see they are now called visiocorp, in any case the same product:

www.ttt-mirror.com

GM now has OEM trailer mirrors, if your truck is of a recent vintage you may
be able to find a set of those  on eBay or elsewhere.
