This is just a guess, but I would expect at least 2-3000 with good
preventive maintenance. With bad PM, who knows?

From what I heard more in the neighborhood of 3 - 5000

From what I was told the other issue is lack of use will lead to
problems. The story I got was to run it for an hour once a month. How
old is the unit you are looking at? ;-)

Id run it longer than 1 hour per month , and, under varying loads
including heavy load. Lack of excersising the GenSet leads to
premature problems . If you dont use the GenSet regularly on trips Id
change the oil every year regardless.

Could you possibly point us to perhaps just two of this many gas generators
that have gone 10000 hours, or is this just another one of your uneducated
guesses? Kind of like your knowledge of law, or more precisely the lack of
same.

Sorry to piggyback on your post, Hank - I didn't see the original.
To some extent, it will depend on -which- 4kw Onan. The older, twin cylinder
1800 rpm Emerald series should be good for well in excess of 3000 hours -
the one I know of with the most use had over 8000 the last time I saw it.
The newer single cylinder 4kw Microlite/Microquiet runs at 3600 rpm, and
probably will need at least a valve job by the time it's reached 5000 hours.
But longevity of either one will depend mostly on how it's used and
maintained. If it has been maintained, 800 hours on the generator is
a -good- thing, not a minus. Probably close to 90 percent of the problems I
find in the generators I work on can be traced to lack of use or lack of
maintenance - like a 10 year old generator with 9 hours on it. Customer:
"It worked fine the last time we used it" Me: "When was that?" Customer:
"Two years ago" Me: Urge to say "Well, DUH!" <g>

Hank, Alan works on gen-sets, so we all just assume he -does- know

No problem Alan. I am sure you have more experience with generators
than I do. Mine was just a guess as I stated. I basically was trying
to convey that 900 hours isn't many IF it was well maintained.
Your response reminded me of an older lady that always wanted me to
maintain her car. She drove it about 500 miles a year. So, after about
10 years, she only had about 5K miles on a 1970 maverick. It was
starting to rust and alot of the seals were drying out and the lifters
were beginning to stick. When I picked it up to change the fluid and
such, I would take it out on the freeway and cruise for about 20 miles
and backSo, I agree that lack of use can be as harmful as lack of
maintenance.
I am very cautious of cars with low miles now.
