ht - 31 Jul 2004 13:35 GMT If you were going to replace 2 12 volt house batteries, and didn't want to put in the gel type, what brand and amp-hour rating , preferrably of sealed batteries, do you use or prefer? If the best is water-added, then which?
Participation is optional, of course, but all replies are appreciated. Thanks

Thanks I would highly recommend Lifeline AGM batteries. My OEM Marine deep cycle battery died in only 8 months of use due to vibration; my Lifeline AGM battery has been in for over 3 years with no problems to date. And no maintenance required.

Pricy ain't they....lol Seriously , I found what may be a local dealer who carries them and the Deka, which is also recommended, along with a local Walmart to look at, so will browse and question this week. The Trojan's aren;'t to be found within 150 miles of here. according to their website..

Larrie Malobenski - 03 Aug 2004 02:51 GMT Here in the Great Lakes area New Castle batteries are highly respected. I don't like Interstate because they are mostly a relabler/distributer. The Amish around here settle for nothing less then Trojan.
>The Trojan's aren;'t >to be found within 150 miles of here. according to their website.. Don't be so sure. According to their website the closest seller is 30-40 miles from me. At best most of them had a few. I know an Amish store 10 miles from me that has over 100 T-105's at a nice price. If you have Amish you'll find Trojans. Next idea; buy the equiptment manager at your golf course a few beers. Maybe he'll get you a couple at his price.
wwemu@cwnet.com - 31 Jul 2004 15:06 GMT Hi HT,
For wet or lead acid flooded batteries, the best seem to be made by Trojan. Before I got the newer three stage charging system, I was getting 4 1/2 years out of them. With the three stage charging system, it appears that they might go as much as ten years, Not there yet, Only been about seven.
For maintenance free, I just installed Deka AGM made by East Penn. A sealed battery with a reputation for long life. While a bit more expensive I am hoping that the decreased maintenance will compensate. Deka seems to be the choice of the higher end coaches.
If you want real quality, then consider either the Rolls or Surette but you need a fat wallet for those. They are seldom used in RVs.

National solar source has the 8T24 Deka for $94.22, but shipping is 21.95 ground UPS, so I'm gonna check the local Batteries Plus, which says they carry them, maybe they can get close to the price..

You don't need to wrap your mind around them - you just connect them in series. Think of them as a 12v battery that comes in two pieces. It is a very common application and works well. We have 4 in a series/parallel combination. You can buy them at Sam's for under $50 each.

They are a bit taller than normal deep discharge batteries. It is it any help, they are 10.5 x 7 inches and 11.75 inches tall including 1.75 inches for the caps and terminals.

Speedy - 01 Aug 2004 08:22 GMT HT, Check out Walmarts store brand batteries. I don't know who makes them but there are only a few actual battery manufacturers. They are inexpensive and have a 1, 2 or 3 year guarantee. Just take it to a Walmart with the sales reciept and they'll give you a brand new one. No prorating age, etc. I got stuck one night at camp Walmart when the chasis battery died. Fifteen minutes later I was on the road. That one failed about 3 weeks later and another walmart just gave me a new one. Turned out it wasn't the battery's fault. I had a voltage reg. problem. I then put 2 of their deep cycle marine batteries in for the coach. These are all heavy duty high amp hour ratings, etc. We've been full-timing for over a year now. We spent part of the winter in S. Ontario and the rest in central NC. Weather went from cold to DAMNED cold. We were snowed in several times at both ends. I figure we've also logged about 60 days dry camping during that time. Heavy duty use of furnaces, etc., all 12v and run off the batteries. The batteries have given me no problems at all. I figure between the price and the guarantee, you can't lose even if you had to replace them after 3 years. Oh yeah, when I returned the first battery they actually gave me a refund and then rang up the replacement as a new sale so the guarantee started over again. There are Walmarts literally everywhere. In the past, I've had trouble, while traveling, finding a dealer for the same brand as a failed battery . Hope this helps Speedy

Exide manugfacturers theirs local here, so maybe I can find someone to get me an employee discount, if Exide has anything for RV's.

Thanks I'd replace my two 225 Amp Hour 6v Trojan T-105s with the same thing. They are not sealed, but I add water only annually, and they've been there since the 99 motorhome was new. I do not discharge them below 12.10 volts, however, and changed the inverter to a three stage Progressive Dynamics 9155 two years ago.

wwemu@cwnet.com - 03 Aug 2004 05:55 GMT Hi Barrie,
Not wanting to be too picky but isn't the Progressive Dynamics 9155 actually a converter rather than an inverter? I have not heard of Progressive Dynamics making inverters but their converters are well thought of.... and they do make a three stage converter/charger.
