Here's hoping that the SA2005 maps are a whole lot more accurate than
SA2003's and SADeluxe's were.

I get very tired of being shown to be 50 yds away from the road I'm driving
on...
Dan Lawyer - 16 Aug 2004 19:00 GMT
You'll be seeing that for many years to come. Some areas and types of roads
will be much more accurate because DeLorme tries to correct them as they
have time using aerial and satellite data and try to do areas they get the
most complaints about in their data revisions forms. Until the folks that
supply the maps (Census and Department of Transportation sources) get the
data straight, all companies that produce mapping software will have areas
that aren't very accurate when used with a GPS.

Believe me I know what it's like. I just had to navigate this weekend to my
daughters new house which has been there for 4 years, but it wasn't on
DeLorme's map, nor anybody else's maps, including the any of the mapping
websites or MS S&T.  The interstates, exchanges and major roads I used were
dead on with the GPS. Some development roads were off of the GPS pretty bad,
others were close enough, so I never got lost or even close to it.  Made a
couple of wrong turns, but at least with the GPS I knew it instantly.

SA2005 will be better, but it won't be anywhere near perfect. Neither is any
other app.

<Chuckle>

Usually, all the roads in a given area will be "off" by the same amount
in the same direction - which tells me that the digitizer was doing its
job correctly but that the operator didn't have the paper properly
aligned [ie. "registered"].

It's too bad that there's no "adjustment" (available to the user) to
permit the user to correct the "registration" of the displayed map.

I would certainly hope that this problem doesn't happen with TOPO - given
that these _should_ be more accurately "registered".

Hey Dan
Does 2005 change the "Find" setup so it remembers how I use it? For instance
99.9% of my "Find" requirements are for "street address" but every time I
start the program it defaults to "Name" which I rarely use. The cover letter
I received hinted that it might be changed but I could not find any
specifics.

BTW you are right about the DOT data often being out of touch with reality.
A  local four lane bypass that was proposed  eons ago but only finished a
few years ago will have certain sections that the GPS tracks well south of
the map route. Why? Because the last few miles to be finished ran into
quicksand!

Yes, the Advanced search remembers what you did last when you close and
reopen the app. It opens back up with the type and values of your last
search. Also the Quick Search seems to be retaining searches better.
Sometimes it would loose them.

Amazing the little things that make our lives easier;>)

Just be aware that they dropped the multiple draw layers and routes per
mapfile. There is only one of each now.  If you must have the multiple draw
layer to control what displays in a mapfile, then you'll have to upgrade to
SA2005 Plus.

Here are a couple of ways you can deal with it that I thought of....

- Import as many of your existing layers as you want into a mapfile' draw
layer and then save that mapfile with a name that will represent the data
you put in it.
- Create separate mapfiles for the existing draw layers you want to keep. As
in the first option I would put a coupe of draw layers in each of these
grouping them something like "FlyingJ, Loves, Dump Stations"
- Create a separate mapfile for each existing draw layer you want to keep.

One of the slick things that SA2005 does is allow you to switch mapfiles
with the GPS running.

This allows you to create a mapfile with your route and whatever draw
objects you need for it, and then when you want one of your other mapfiles
with the unique draw objects, just open it. Your route won't be in these
mapfiles, but you can still find stuff you want in relation to your GPS
symbol. Even if you use the Radar Feature, just center the GPS then do the
radar and it will route to it.

These are just a few things I've though of to get around not having multiple
draw layers in a mapfile, I'm sure there are other ways to get around it.

Dan, when SA2003 immerged, I bought it, got frustrated with the
interface, slow routing, etc, returned it and went back to SA9. Then
after reading your positive comments about SA2004, I decided to try it
especially because the multiple draw layers were very useful. Now, if
living with the warts for all this time, I've learned to love it. It
takes a great deal of patience to get used to the interface. The ability
to turn layers off and on is very useful. If you edited the draw layer,
the new info would show no matter what map file you were using.

Then we learned that MapNGo will be discontinued. I used that for AAA's
tour book and CG's. I still use 7.0.

Now Delorme wants to force us to spend 3 x the $ just to keep the
features we had on SA2004.  I'll stick with SA2004 until I find another
alternative.

I have had a new SA for at least 5 years, when the went to the newer
interface I was forced to buy a new Laptop to accommodate the extra
resources it required because my older laptop was too slow. However I am not
exactly sure what you mean with the multiple draw levels, could you please
explain it. I'm not sure I even use it and why would I.

Thanks

It's like having clear plastic overlays with certain map locations say;
one with all Wal-Mart's, one with all flyingJ's etc. You just
check/uncheck a box and the data overlays your map. If memory servers me
correct, it's available with SA2003 and SA2004.

How do you get a overlay for say Wal-Mart's? Do you have to manually set a
map tag for every one. Or do you do a search for Wal-Mart?

Thanks

There's a Discovery owners web site that has a load of draw files. Use
google or perhaps someone here can point you to the web site.

Have they added any items to the right hand column, the one where they
have the "center on GPS box"?  It's mostly empty and I'd like to see a
series of user configurable boxes there.  Why can't I have a regular
compas there instead of the one that's there always pointing to the
front of the rig.  Why not a box for elevation, speed, distance to
turn, etc?

I've been wanting that to be user configurable too, but it isn't (yet).

However, they have improved the GPS Status window, and if you move the tab
all the way up, the data display is huge. It's also very visible, all the
way down the way they did it, with Speed and Heading having their own
windows.
It now includes...
Speed
Heading
Compass
Lat
Lon
Elevation

Hopefully they will put it in the control panel (soon before I get to old to
drive;>), so you could see this info along with the route turn tab which is
really what you want to see when your tracking a route. That is really nice
this year with not only the next turn, but the turn after that.
