I saw this in Motorhome magazine last night. They claim its really boosts the signal. If anyone has one , please give us a report on how it is. We are now able to use our cell phones from our home park while nobody else can. We couldn't get sufficient signal without one but it does make a difference. I don't think it will get you a signal at all campgrounds but it does help to reach out a little better. You will also need a good antenna. We use the Wilson Trucker and if service is marginal I can often get by with just the antenna. I even get gain from the antenna just putting it on the dash of the MH, but a little better when you give it some elevation above the roofline. For what it's worth. The cable comes in through a small conduit I had my builder put in during construction. Without the antenna, I routinely get 0-1 bar; with it, I get 4-5. Had it up at the mountain house for a year or so, with similar results. I don't usually have a problem getting a decent signal on the road, but I couldn't use my cellphone at home without it. There is a huge amount of loss. In the cases where people already have an antenna permantly mounted (usually on the roof of an RV (IE way high) or on the roof of the towing truck (usually with a metal body), the internal antennas on many PCMCIA cards are really really bad in those situations, and any signal (no matter how bad) is usually better than none.The only ones I am familiar with, are the SMC high power cards that have antenna connectors on them (you can either use the internal antenna, or external with the pigtails SMC sells. They connect to the card at one end and a standard connector at the other end, that is a standard connector that can be used with the trucker antenna). Fraid there are very very few PCMCIA cards that have external antenna jacks on them (and I have no idea about the Orinoco). A much better idea (and what I went to later on) is a keychain WiFi finder (lights and audible alarm when a WiFi signal is present)and an aimable directional WiFi specific antenna on the roof. The worst part of my RV is that is is big and hard to park. Yep, the Orinoco has an ext. ant. miniplug jack. I have a 5 dBi mobile magnet mnt. omni, but I thought maybe that big Wilson would pick up a sig better. I also have a cable with the mini plug for the Orinoco on one end and some kind of female AN coax fitting on the other. I'd guess it would screw right on to the Wilson. I had hoped the Wilson would be a useable freq for the wifi card. Thanks, Dave > > Its at :www.talkfurther.com I have owned a Digital Antenna DA4000 dual band cellphone amplifier with receive preamp for two years. It cost around $200, but in the last year traveling in the RV I did not connect it once, as I did not ever get out of range of a tower using only my cell phone and Wilson Trucker antenna. The previous year I found areas with no service out west, but few of these would give service with the amplifier if there was not service without it. I would not say it is worthless, but there are very few areas where it makes the difference between working and not working. If you spend considerable time in one of these areas, it might be worthwhile for you. One thing you must be aware of; it is unwise to connect an amplifier and leave it on all the time. In many cases with marginal signal, I found the phone would work with just the antenna, but WOULD NOT work with the amplifier. The cellular system has safeguards built into it to kick you off if you hit too many towers at once, or overload a tower with too much signal. I find the amplifier to be much more problem than it's worth the way we move almost every day. If it does not work here today (which is very rare), it will probably work where we are tomorrow, and with much less trouble than hooking up the amplifier....and much greater assurance of success too. Sure glad I found some mention of that problem when I was shopping for an amp. I went with the SignalReach SA200. It automatically and constantly adjusts the output gain so that it never overpowers the site--you can leave it in the circuit all the time. Actually I got the TP200 -- it's the same amp as the SA200 but in a transportable vinyl case. That way I can have it connected to a Wilson roof-mounted antenna in the motorhome but move it to the toad with a window mounted antenna for day trips. While you may think what you described is not a problem, if you are using a CDMA phone it may make it impossible for anyone in the vicinity to use that tower. This is because one of the features of CDMA is variable power; a base station will always try to keep the noise floor at the lowest possible level by directing the output power down. If the base station receives a strong signal, it will reduce power. This is why a user can get a strong signal one day and a weaker one from the same location later; the more signals (or stronger signals) that the base station receives, the lower power it transmits with. So the bottom line is this; the use of an amplifier may help you, but it will make it more difficult for anyone within maybe a 1/2 mile to make a good connection. Not very neighborly at all, but they'll never know you're the reason. Marty I don't see the problem, or understand why that would be true. If so then what's the difference if somebody stopped under the tower as opposed to someone sitting 1 mile away. Would the tower really suppress the distant signal because one signal is closer and stronger? I do not think power control is unique to CDMA. But I doubt the SA amp actually decodes the power commands from the tower, any more than my DA4000 does; it just lets the cellphone reduce it's power and it is a linear amplifier with so many dB of gain, so the amplifier's power goes down as the cellphone's power does, but the output is XdB above the cellphone's output. The problem starts when the cellphone reduces it's output to minimum, and the tower still gets more than it wants....it cannot reduce power more. Then the system gets degraded for everyone using that tower, as your excessive power overloads the tower's sensitive receiver and prevents weak signals from being heard. Have you noticed any "funny" stuff happening when you are operating close to a tower using your amplifier...like distorted sound, folks complaining YOU sound funny, or your phone will not make a call? I've spoke to both the mfg rep and the local distrib and they both said the SR hardware and firmware was unique in that it did vary the power as needed to avoid the exact problems you describe. The distributor is the largest wireless distrib in DFW and he said as far as he knew the SA was the only one doing that. Not sure he mentioned the DA4000 but he did mention the Wilson and Smoothtalker brands. Here's a quote from the manual: These cellular and iDEN signal amplifiers are network-compatible devices that ensure proper power levels in the transmit (uplink) path. This enhances the user’s experience without compromising cellular or iDEN network inter-operability requirements. The amplifiers’ receive circuitry is appropriately optimized for network operation. Features Power control logic to ensure maximum output power is within cellular and iDEN standards. Self-adjusting circuitry allows it to work with any cellular telephone/cradle combination. Network-compatible operation to ensure transmit power tracks the connected cellular or iDEN telephone output. This is well over 6 times what your average handset can put out. if you're far enough out to use that much power, the base station will reduce power to the point that a 0.5W handset will not connect. Anytime it saw more than what was needed it would instruct the phone (and therefore the amp) to reduce power one increment and thus TO IT power would never appear to be more than .6w or whatever the max accepted power is (or whatever the tower "wanted"--could be minimum). As you got further away the signal it sees would get weaker and it would send the "more power" command. At some "x" distance the amp would be at full power; at some "y" distance the amp would be at minimum power. The actual handset would be at minimum power all the time. The only problem I see is if the phones have a fixed number of power levels the towers could be sending "change to level 2" instead of "change to next higher power level"--that might not be enough "levels" to keep the amp's power output correct. But I have no idea how that's done--may not even be discrete commands--the handsets may adjust power levels based on a analog side carrier signal--could be simply "you're ok", "need more output", "need less output" etc. Someone with knowledge of the inner workings of each system would have to advise. In any case, based on the result of whatever the amp is doing, I'm seeing very consistent signal at the phone, whether 30 feet from a tower or 10 miles, with no "funny" results like being kicked off a tower or distortion--it just works-and with it connected all the time. If you don't care about anyone else, go for it! As far as the technical question, the base station continually tries to reduce power until the cell phone starts losing packets and requests resends. Then it goes up a couple of levels (there are a fair number of them, but I don't remember specifics) and starts reducing power again. There is no "power up" command for either the uplink or downlink, just a missing packet flag. Marty I think that one thing folks are missing is that the authorized power for cellular service is 3 watts and that there are still a number of phones out there that put out the maximum power. The older bag phones and other mobile phones are the 3 watt variety. AFAIK, the only ones that are limited to the 0.6 watts are the little handheld phones that are so prevalent today. Also.
