Looking for recommendations on calibrated engine gauges - links and/or
experiences?

I have been able to find a few aeronautic sets - but the are mostly
Lycoming specific.

What are you trying to measure, exactly?  VDO has been Saab's supplier
for gauges (factory and accessory) for many decades, for good reason.

I've used a car as a test-bed for aircraft instrumentation before, it's
measuring the same things really.  If it's good enough to pass FAA/PMA,
it's plenty good for your car, and the gauge doesn't know if it's on
a plane or a car, after all.  But, do check out VDO or let me know if you
would like me to find out where I bought mine from.  I have a few that
I took out of my c900, as well.

Specifically - I'm looking for accuracy in on a numbered metric sweep. One
0f the interesting things about aircraft gauges is that they can be had so
that they do not present in a fixed arc - that is to say the temperature
plate rotates in a circle behind a marked lens and can provide a wider
range of more accurate readings.

I want to find oil pressure as well as transmission (5 speed) and oil
temperatures. However, I would also like to consider a second tree in the
A Pillar with exhaust temperature as well as master cylinder and fuel
pressure. Trying to keep my ashtray as I use it.

I want to avoid an screen based gauge solution, mostly because I find it
easier to follow a analogue gauge on the road. Links are welcome if you
have any.

This is a US source, but they may ship anywhere. It's from an ad in a racing
magazine or sources I know racers use:
http://www.autometer.com/
Racing would be the best sources. Formula 1/open wheel would be the most likely
to use the information you're looking for.

Have you taken a look at Autometer? They make all sort of guff from basic
oil temp/pressure right through to cylinder head temp/egt stuff. As I've
said, Racetech also have a very good reputation this side of the pond.

Remind me, what do you drive? If you've a 9000 then you've got a greater set
of DIN slots to play with but less stowage bin. If you've a C900, then that
stowage bin is going to be a good friend if you want a *lot* of gauges.

Have a look at http://www.egauges.com/ for a massive variety. I'm sure
you'll find something there.

Dex - are you talking about auxiliary in-car gauges or more
mechanical/garage type gauges? I've not much experience of the latter, other
than to say I've been pleased with the Gunson tools that I've bought.

If we're talking in-car gauges, I'd say VDO - especially as you're in north
America and seemingly would have the full range available. I've been very
pleased with the Racetech gauges that I've bought - very little needle
bounce and consistent readings. I've also been very pleased with the Equus
gauges I've used - cheap'n'chearful, but again good quality.

Hey brother Paul - looking for cockpit gauges and sensors. VDO may be the
right answer, however they don't seem to have a pyrometer and no one seems
to have a transmission tempurature gauge for a five speed. I think I may
have to use an standard oil gauge..

Will poke around for Equus - thank you kindly. I could probably use a
Gunson set and extend the hoses - but it would be a little crowded in the
front seats I fear.. :/ ..
