Well, you don't mention that you checked the reverse light switch or
that you actually checked that both bulbs haven't blown.

My Aero does a similar thing but the starter motor turns, but the
solenoid to pre-engage the starter gear doesn't energise. I'll get
round to it sometime, same as you though, usually the 4th time does it.

When you say *nothing* happens, do you mean that not only does the starter
not turn, but the dash/ignition lights fail to illuminate too?
That is what happened to my '97 9000. The Turn-Key-Nothing-At-All-Happens
scenario turned out to be the ignition switch. A cheap and straightforward
job in the end. It was a bit of pain to diagnose as it only did it very
occasionally at first, before becoming a bit more regular, and finally it
occurred almost all the time and became almost impossible to start.
I suggest getting it fixed sooner rather than later as I left mine to the
stage where the ignition switch was cutting out en route, meaning no engine,
no PAS, no brake servo, an no lights at night!

No, starter turns but the solenoid doesn't pre-engage the starter gear
so the motor just spins without engaging with the flywheel gear.

Is replacing the starter the solution to this problem, or is the solenoid a
separate bit?

If you can get the solenoid on it's own, then that's all you need to
replace. For many cars you can't get the solenoid as a separate item.

I realize what you say is true as a general rule, but I was looking for an
answer specific to the model being discussed (9000T). I also understand
that even if a separate solenoid is available, it may have a greater cost
and repair effort than buying the complete starter assembly from an
aftermarket supplier. I was wondering which repair method others were using
(or planning to use) for this problem on this vintage of car.

Ah, I see.

Well when I get round to mine, I'll take a look at the solenoid, it
might just be sticking then again it might not. I don't know until I
get it off. :)

Should be able to work on it seperately.

For my car '90 9000T
I turn the key, lights come on, but no sound from the starter or engine.
I try again, and again lights on, but no sounds from engine compartment,
starter, etc...
I try third time, the start tries and then the engine starts.
Where is the solenoid on a '90 9000T located? I had the starter
replaced once and I still have the same problem.

It's on top of the starter motor which is behind the engine, underneath
the inlet manifold.
Doesn't sound like that's your problem though but you'd need to put a
meter on the energising lead to see if power is coming from the
ignitions switch.

Your problem is the ignition switch, not the starter solenoid.

I did check both bulbs.
Where is the reverse light switch located?

From the diagram that I have, I think it's on the top right hand side of
the gear box, facing the nearside wing at the rear of the end plate.
